Pellegatti critical of Tomori after errors in Man City game: “It’s unbearable”

By Oliver Fisher -

Carlo Pellegatti revealed that he wants to see more from Fikayo Tomori after a shaky performance during the friendly win over Manchester City on Saturday night.

Milan began their time in the United States with a 3-2 win against Manchester City, and there were some interesting takeaways for Paulo Fonseca to reflect on. Lorenzo Colombo scored twice from two Samuel Chukwueze crosses, while Marco Nasti got the winner.

Tomori found it tough to deal with Oscar Bobb, who dribbled past him in the first goal, and then James McAtee got the better of him for the 2-2 goal. The Englishman must return to being a decisive player like in the Scudetto season, after two difficult years where he fluctuated good and bad performances.

Pellegatti spoke to Radio Rossonera after the game in New York to offer his assessments and he admitted to being a bit worried by the defensive aspect of Milan’s game, despite the win.

“Loftus-Cheek may have touched the ball twice in the first half. In the second half he touched it a little more, but what a gulf there was between his presence compared to that of Chukwueze and Saelemaekers,” he said.

“I already liked Loftus-Cheek until his injury on September 30th, I expect him to be like this. I’m not worried, but I’ll start a topic: Tomori. It’s not that I didn’t like him, in this case you can’t blame Pioli or Fonseca: on that cross from the left he can’t let the opponent get past him from behind…

“The problem last year for him and Thiaw was precisely the individual errors. It’s unbearable that he gets past our centre-back like that from behind. It was McAtee, not Mbappé. You can’t. Last year he didn’t have the best season in terms of ferocity and attention, so I need him to give me good guarantees.”

  1. We need people to be critical of journalists after they speak 💩

This old geezer should’ve retired years ago

  2. No, Tomori definitely played a terrible game by his standards. It is pre-season, but he wasn’t called up to the national team, the last season was disappointing from a performance level for Tomori.

He certainly needs to improve his awareness and his focus when passing the ball. He fumbled on a few passes and he lost a lot of arial duels in the box.

I saw this in his game last season and in the game against Man City. He needs to refocus.

    1. Bro, it’s preseason friendlies and Man City are ahead of Milan in there match fitness and preparation. This was the 2nd game played and it’s clear that Milan players are not all up to their standard level of fitness.

So relax man. Pellegatti is an idiot who talks too much. Tomori will be playing on the right side of the defense with Pavlovic on the left side.

There’s a lot of time for players to improve their fitness level and that includes their mental sharpness and awareness.

      1. Normally, yes…

But his trends aren’t new this summer. its continuation of what we’ve been seeing from him. Falling asleep on his marking assignments and fouls from overzealous defending/challenges …

        1. He need to cover lot of space between CB’s and Left back who is very far.
          It’s always tricky.
If he leave the space between CB’s he could have been fired a lot by experts.

He is not at his best, but it’s not just his fault.

  3. Tomori was a problem last year and it will be a problem this year. Especially if you want to play the ball from the back, he is a liability. Hopefully moving him to the right side could help with his passing accuracy.
But he has never confirmed the level we have seen in the Scudetto season.

  4. After 3 (and a half) seasons at Milan, he should be the rock-steady and the benchmark of our defense. But still, we often see the extreme volatility of his performance. Looks like it’s Thiaw who’ll depart. So let’s hope that he can complement well with Pavlovic and reach his Scudetto performance again.

  5. No Tomori played exactly to his standards, which are very low. He is a trainwreck back there and needs to go. If you watch the games and have some understanding of how a center-back is supposed to play you would realize that Tomori has been awful for a long time and is never going to get better. Why sell Thiaw and keep Tomori is what I want to know.

  6. Tomori has never convinced me. At best he’s “above average”, but that’s not good enough for us. I think deep down the club knows it’s CB department is a bit weak in the grand scheme of things. I wouldn’t be upset if over the next couple of summers we see both Thiaw and Tomori moved on. I also hope Fonseca has the guts to pick players based on form (except for certain names which will basically always have to play, like Leao and Theo), so that if Gabbia is doing better he gets the start over Tomori or Thiaw. We need results this season.

  7. Sell him if there is good management
He looks the not the player against him
Stupid he does not deserve to be lines up for our team who want to win the scudetto.
Look the two goals even the second goal scores by man city

  8. Match sharpness… preseason…but that was poor from him. I’ve always been critical of his aerial ability specifically

  9. Tomori has been awful playing as a left centre back,
He completely losses his composure once the ball gets to his weaker left foot, you could virtually see him struggle.
However his best performance has been at RCB with Kalulu as partner or Kjaer.
He is a Solid defender. All he lacks is experience that kjaer could give.

  10. Tomori has phenomenal recovery speed to make the tackle but to butcher a quote by Paolo…” I’ve already made a mistake if I have to tackle…” Enough said!

  11. I think people forget the defence we had before tomori and eventually loosing the best midfielders by replacing with scrap.

You can complain as much as you want unless he get support from midfield it remains same. You cannot put the defense in check for 90mins. Any player will make mistakes in this case.

He is not at his best but a single CB cannot stop entire attack.

There is often Pioli played 1on1 for CB’s.
Not every time the CB’s can manage for 90mins.

Now it’s upto Fonseca how he wants to play with CB’s.
    Let’s see

  12. He will stay and play just for one reason…his speed that can cover the balls behind the defensive line specialy when you play as a very short team that is pressing a lot…pretty sure that’s how we’ll play…other special qualities I dont see at him
