Krzysztof Piatek has once again spoken about his time at AC Milan including the pressures he felt and how a change in formation from Marco Giampaolo had a negative impact.
The Poland international exploded onto the scene after his arrival from Genoa during the 2018-19 season as he had six goals in his first five games for the club, but Giampaolo’s arrival didn’t do him much good and by the end of his time at the club he had fallen out of favour under current Rossoneri head coach Stefano Pioli.
A number of different Premier League clubs were linked with a move for the former Genoa star, but it was the German capital club Hertha who won the race, and they announced the capture of Piatek with many different outlets claiming they paid over €24m to land him.
He spoke during an interview with DAZN to reflect on his time with Milan.
“The first seven months everything worked. I scored a lot of goals with Gattuso, then coach Giampaolo arrived and changed the formation and the idea,” he said (via Football Italia).
“It was a system where players didn’t play in their own roles, I played with Castillejo as a striker and Suso as a trequartista, these are not their positions.
“In two months I was wrong, the team was wrong, it was difficult. I can’t say he understood me poorly, but I needed time to play with this system because it was the first time I played with the trequartista and the two forwards.
“I also have to understand what didn’t work. But I think we both needed time, two months is a short time. When I arrived at Milan I wanted to take the number 9 shirt right away, but Gattuso and the club told me to take the 19 or another number but not the 9 because you have to earn it.
“After six months I took the number 9 and I only scored a few goals and all the fans asked me why I changed number.”
