Pioli praises two individuals after ‘fundamental’ Genoa win: “We played the right game” – video

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli reflected on a ‘fundamental’ win against Genoa, and admitted that there are more tense matches to come in the final five.

Milan were far from their best once again in the 2-0 victory over the Rossoblu but an early goal from Rafael Leao helped to calm the nerves and Junior Messias made sure of the win in the closing stages. Pioli spoke to Milan TV after the game to discuss the win and the performance.

“We know it was fundamental. Two draws had disappointed us and complicated the table, which must be excellent at the end. The more the matches go towards the end of the season, the more tense they will be, We were nervous. We played the right game, risking little and taking the opportunities,” he said (via MilanNews).

On Genoa: “They gave us more tactical serenity. Genoa did not face the match to make a low defensive phase, so our characteristics can become decisive. Us coaches will make our evaluations, but we are satisfied and we want to recover our energy because Tuesday we have a difficult game.”

On Giroud: “I think we had to serve him more today. Kessie brought a central player there, but we didn’t serve him many times. There is no doubt about his qualities, he’s a great player. He’s making a great contribution to the team.”

On Gabbia: “Matteo is one of those reasons why we are having these results. He is a reliable guy, he is tactically and morally prepared. I’m sorry for Calabria, but when you have great players at your disposal, everything is easier.”

On the next matches: “The expectations have risen, we have to be good at knowing how to manage the pressures. My guys are strong and we have to keep trying.”
