Pioli hints as position change for Bennacer and reveals admiration for Fiorentina star

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has hinted at a possible position change for Ismael Bennacer and has revealed his admiration for a Fiorentina midfielder.

Sky Italia (via MilanNews.it) recently reported that Milan are thinking about the idea of signing a new midfielder to play in front of the defence, which could see Bennacer move into the mezz’ala position.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Italia’s microphones, Pioli was first asked whether he thinks Bennacer can play that role.

“I really believe so,” was his firm response (via MilanNews.it).

He also then picked out Gaetano Castrovilli as his breakout star of the season up until this point, which is particularly interesting given the Rossoneri have been linked with a move for him in recent months.

The 22-year-old was one of the most impressive performers on the pitch at San Siro when the two sides met last month, netting La Viola’s second goal on the way to a 3-1 rout.

After the game, Castrovilli admitted his love for Milan – the club he supported growing up – and revealed that Kaka and Ronaldinho are his idols.

This was followed up by Calciomercatonews.com claiming that Milan believe they can beat Inter in the race to land him.

On the playmaker, Pioli said: “He is a player I knew already when I was coaching Fiorentina even though I was never able to train him because he was at Cremonese.

“I had seen some qualities in him but I didn’t think he could be so decisive from the beginning.”

On the revelation team of the year, however, Pioli has no doubts: “Atalanta. They are a club with great continuity, scouting and incredible results like the Champions League round of 16. It is an important step and Gasperini’s work must be rewarded and praised for doing great things.”
