Pioli explains selections and insists Milan will show ‘desire, attitude and mentality’ vs. Chelsea

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has claimed that his team have multiple motivations to go out and put on a better showing against Chelsea compared to last week.

Milan will welcome Chelsea to San Siro tonight with the aim of getting revenge for the disappointing 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge last week. Pioli’s men will have to be far better than they were in London in order to get a result against a Graham Potter side that have now won three in a row.

Pioli spoke to Mediaset Infinity+ before the game against Chelsea and was asked about the magnitude of the match, with his comments relayed by MilanNews and translated below.

“We have many motivations in this match: to improve our ranking in the group, to show that we are not what was seen in London, to want to continue with Saturday’s performance and to do well in front of our fans. There are all the possibilities to have a great match,” he said.

“I have no doubts about the desire, attitude and mentality of the team. In London, after the second goal, it became difficult, but I think it was the first time in a long time with a two-goal disadvantage. We will be motivated and stimulated in the right way to have a great performance.”

Pioli decided to entrust almost the exact same starting line-up that beat Juventus 2-0 at the Meazza on Saturday evening, with the only change being Rade Krunic coming into the midfield for Tommaso Pobega.

“Today we welcomed back Messias, but only to come off the bench. Something on the right needed to be changed. But beyond the positions on the pitch, it is important to have a careful team in both phases and to be more dangerous in front of goal, as we did not do in London.”
