Report: Milan have beaten Chelsea, Inter to 121-goal striker – announcement next week

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are in advanced talks with the entourage of Napoli striker Dries Mertens and an announcement could arrive next week.

Mertens continues to be strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, but according to Spanish outlet TodoFichajes it is Milan who have swooped for the free transfer of the Belgium international.

His deal expires on June 30 and the striker will not renew his contract but his top priority is to continue playing in Serie A, so the option to play at San Siro appears to have been the deciding factor.

The club-player agreement is near and could be announced next week, the report claims. The 32-year-old has 121 goals and 73 assists for Napoli in 311 games across all competitions (via Transfermarkt) and has also been linked with a move to Inter.

However, it appears that the Rossoneri are close to winning the race and securing the man who could be a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is set to depart unless he agrees a renewal.
