Reports: Milan and Inter in five-team race to land Atalanta star with 130 goal contributions

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan appear to be in the running to land Atalanta star Papu Gomez, a report claims, but they are not the only team interested.

Gomez appears to have severed his ties with the Bergamo club due to an ongoing dispute between him and head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, with most major sources now reporting he is set to leave in January.

According to the newspaper Tuttosport (via MilanNews), a derby could break out between Milan and Inter for the 32-year-old. Both clubs have excellent relations with Giuseppe Riso, the player’s agent, and if the right economic conditions were found then offers could arrive from Milan.

For Milan, it will be necessary to see what happens with Hakan Calhanoglu and his contract renewal as well as what Atalanta’s request for the card will be, given the club’s philosophy is not to overpay for players above 25.

According to what is being reported by il Corriere della Sera meanwhile, Napoli, Lazio and Roma are also monitoring the situation of the former Catania star in addition to the two Milanese teams.

A transfer abroad should not be completely ruled out, perhaps out of “respect” for Atalanta fans. Gomez has 59 goals and 71 assists for Atalanta across 250 appearances (all competitions).
