Repubblica: Milan join the race for talented Serie A and Azzurri defender

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are one of many teams that are now looking closely at Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno who was recently called up to the Italy squad by Luciano Spalletti, a report claims.

As has been reported by La Repubblica (via Milan News 24), Milan have added Buongiorno to their long list of possible centre-back purchases.

Inter have also been linked with a move for Buongiorno which means there is stiff competition from within Italy, but there is also interest from Premier League side Arsenal, which presents a financial issue.

Torino president Urbano Cairo would like to wait until the summer before he sells Buongiorno and he wants an auction to take place, ideally with the fee ending up as no less than €35m.

Buongiorno impressed in the recent international break with Italy, particularly in the final game against Ukraine that clinched qualification for Euro 2024. He seems set to be Torino’s next big sale.

    1. I’ve been talking about Buongiorno as an good alternative to Scalvini. Cairo will milk us for every penny, but so will Atalanta. Buongiorno will cost 35-40, Scalvini will cost 50m at least. We also have players they may be interested in for exchange, such as Pobega, but I guess that also goes for CDK and Scalvini.

  1. Why does it seem like Milan is always first at the gate but last to the party ?
We could have signed him already instead of going for the big gamble

  2. I like Buongiorno. However, I have reservations about whether is a particularly good fit for this squad given what it would likely cost to sign him. For this reason I do not think this is serious.

Transfermarkt has his value at 20m euros. As I understand Buongiorno is militantly loyal to Torino, he’d be an Ultra if he wasn’t a player. No one is going to do any favours to move Buongiorno out. It’s very similar to the Tonali situation. I think that makes the value >30m or more. He signs a deal to give Torino extra time to do a deal in the event they can’t get what they want. There is no rush (particularly given that Schuurs is injured). >30m is also what it cost to sign Bremer from Torino.

First point, once we spend that money, I can’t help but think that there is a better deal to be done for Scalvini, particularly if CDK can offset some of that value (even if we spend the same amount of cash on Scalvini or a bit more). Different level of player, he’s generational talent.

Second point, and more relevant to why I do not think this is any real chance of happening, is that Buongiorno is very similar to Thiaw. Sure, he’s a left footer but he’s it’s more important that he’s about the same speed and agility. He’s a better, more reliable player than Thiaw but the difference is not 30m euros worth. I just don’t see us spending that money of this type of player, not when we seem intent on maintaining a high line.

Calafiori is killing it at Bologna. He’s 188cm (not a giant like Buongiorno or Thiaw but big enough), he’s more mobile, he’s a left footer and a converted left back wing back. He’d be excellent cover as a CB and good cover for Theo for probably 1/3 of the price of Buongiorno. That’s where I’d be looking.

I’d welcome Buongiorno because he is quality but it doesn’t really feel like a signing we are serious about.
