It seemed as though Lazio’s Coppa Italia win over AC Milan was a controversy-free victory. Well, that might not be the case.
As a reminder, Lazio were up in arms about a penalty that they feel should have been awarded in the Serie A meeting at San Siro a few days ago, so much so that there was talk of getting ‘revenge’ at the Stadio Olimpico last night, which ultimately they did.

Shoe on the other foot
As La Gazzetta dello Sport report, the first half of the Coppa Italia round of 16 match between Lazio and Milan in the capital went smoothly without any real flashpoints. Only one player was booked: Pavlovic in the second minute for a late challenge on Matteo Guendouzi.
In the second half, there were still no thorny situations near the penalty area, until the final 10 minutes. Milan protested over the corner that led to the only goal, with doubts about whether Alessio Romagnoli or Pervis Estupinan got the final touch.
Calciomercato.com also acknowledge the doubt, and what ex-referee Graziano Cesari commented on Italia 1: “Guida refereed very well. There was only one small game situation, the one that led to the corner kick that then led to the goal. The images are not clear and some doubts remain, but VAR cannot intervene.”
I clocked this immediately when it happened. Really bad luck for us. I don’t think anyone who watched the game is too up late though because we did not play well enough to win.

This is the real conundrum, because at some point we’ll stop winning these, as was the case last night. We need to start playing more positively and scoring more. Can’t rely on keeping a clean sheet and hoping to nick a goal.
