Romano: Milan dealt major blow in pursuit of €20m Arsenal-linked Ligue 1 starlet

AC Milan have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Saint-Etienne defensive starlet Wesley Fofana, a report claims, who is set to sign a new deal.

According to what is being reported by Fabrizio Romano for Calciomercato.com, Fofana is a name that Milan likes very much, very much, and his name shines above all the other young defenders on the club’s wish list due to his consistency, quality and personality despite being a very young age.

Milan have seen him live in action several times, reaffirming their desire to try and bring him to Italy and even having probed last January before signing Simon Kjaer, just as it became apparent that Jean-Clair Todibo would not be arriving.

Despite Boban’s farewell Fofana’s name remained on the list of targets, but something has changed from now, because Milan were banking on being able to offer the 19-year-old a big salary increase.

However, Saint-Etienne have reached an agreement with the player for his renewal until 2024 with doubled salary, a problem for Milan and clubs in the Premier League (reports are still suggesting Arsenal are keen) who hoped for a low cost deal.

Therefore, those who want Fofana will have to raise the offer in the summer: today his value exceeds €20million and there will be no discounts. All of a sudden, he may no longer be a top defensive target for the Diavolo hierarchy.
