Sassuolo 1-0 Milan Women: Rossonere condemned to bottom half finish

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan Women will be spending the second half of the season playing against teams in the bottom half after their 1-0 defeat away at Sassuolo on Matchday 16.

Davide Corti’s side have failed to improve under his guidance and they mathematically cannot reach the top half before the table splits after Matchday 18.

The scoring was opened when Angelica Soffia gave away a penalty after around half an hour of the game. It was the veteran striker Daniela Sabatino who stepped up and scored, putting the Neroverde firmly in control of proceedings.

That proved to be the only goal of the game and it is one that continues a serious upturn in form for Sassuolo, who have won four of their last five and will almost certainly end the regular season in fifth, the last top-half spot.

Whilst at this stage it still seems unlikely that Milan will get dragged into a genuine relegation battle, they would have expected to be in the top half come the split and perhaps be battling for a spot in the Women’s Champions League.

They have a nine-point lead over Pomigliano who occupy the relegation playoff spot, and a 12-point lead over Napoli at the very bottom.
