Schalke defender admits being aware of Milan interest: “There have been some talks”

By Oliver Fisher -

Schalke defender Malick Thiaw has confirmed that there were talks regarding a potential move to AC Milan, but did not shed much more light.

Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara tried to sign a new centre-back during the January transfer window after Simon Kjaer sustained a season-ending injury and while there were several players linked and lots of rumours, one did not arrive.

One of the players that was linked by multiple sources was Thiaw, who is deemed a talented young profile for the future with the ability to be useful in the present, but no agreement was reached with Schalke and the 21-year-old remained to try and help the Gelsenkirchen club gain promotion back to the top flight.

Interviewed by WAZ, the defender commented on his failed Milan move and admitted that there were talks.

“There have been some talks that my agents have dealt with. I focused on Schalke and I’m still here. God has a destiny for everyone. I prefer promotion over being the most expensive player in the 2. Bundesliga history. But of course both are possible,” he said.

It was recently reported by Calciomercato.com that Milan are still in the market for a new centre-back and Thiaw was among the names listed as potential targets, so he may get his big move yet.
