There has been a conference call between every Serie A club to discuss the situation regarding the European Super League, a report claims.
According to MilanNews, there was an ‘extraordinary’ assembly this afternoon via video call to talk about the new Super League. All the Serie A clubs were present – including Milan, Juventus and Inter – who were not originally expected to be part of the discussion.
UEFA meanwhile has distanced itself from the birth of the Super League and have approved a new format for club competitions starting from the 2024-25 season. As for the new Champions League, the total number of teams will increase from 32 to 36; the biggest change, because it will lead to the transformation from the traditional group stage into a single league stage that includes all participating teams.
Each club will therefore be guaranteed a minimum of 10 games against 10 different opponents (five home games, five away games) instead of the previous six games against three teams.
The top eight teams in the league will automatically qualify for the knockout stage, while the teams finishing ninth to 24th will compete in a home/away play-off to secure the round of 16 of the competition.
In the UEFA Europa League there will be 8 league games, and in the UEFA Europa Conference League 6 league games. It is subject to further discussions and agreements, but these two competitions will also see the presence of 36 teams each in the championship phase.
The Champions League qualification will continue to be open and earned through performance in domestic competitions, but there will be two places that will go to clubs with the highest club coefficient in the last five years that did not qualify for the Champions League group stage but qualified for the Champions League, Europa League or Conference preliminaries.
Finally, as per Spiegel the Super League board have offered Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and PSG membership in the competition under the title of ‘proposed additional founding members’. Bayern and BVB have 30 days to respond while PSG have two weeks.
