Wrong call on penalty and missed red card also part of ‘disastrous’ performance from Serra

By Oliver Fisher -

Referee Marco Serra’s performance has come under the microscope and it is not just because he disallowed AC Milan’s late winning goal against Spezia.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) have analysed the key incidents from the game, starting with the obvious one which was the decision not to allow Junior Messias’ goal to stand because he had blown for a free-kick for a foul on Ante Rebic simultaneously, therefore not playing an advantage as he should have.

The referee’s immediate apology is of little use to the Rossoneri who ended up going on to lose the game. The advantage had to be given and Milan would have probably won the match 2-1, which would have put them top.

Serra had also made a mistake previously when he gave a foul on Rafael Leao for an alleged high boot on Provedel, but he was then forced to overturn his original decision having reviewed the images on the VAR monitor.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport (via MilanNews) describe Serra’s officiating as ‘disastrous to say the least’ mentioning the disallowed goal and the penalty call he got wrong, and not only that. Emmanuel Gyasi – who scored the 95th-minute winner for the away side – should have been sent off. He was booked in the first half, and he deserved a second yellow for two more fouls committed in the second half.

  1. Yeah we can play it cool and say he made a few mistakes, but this guy is horrendous. Truly incompetent. He shouldn’t be officiating Afghanistan regional league.

Clubs need to be harsh, League needs to be harsh, Association needs to be harsh, he shouldn’t be suspended, his license needs to be revoked and he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a football stadium as a message to other incompetent troglodytes still officiating Serie A games.

    1. It seems Serie A is perfectly happy with the current level of referees. No wonder Italian teams haven’t won sh** in club competitions in the past 1,5 decades…

  2. Any more excuses ? If we are not able to win against Spezia, when will we win the Scudetto ? Meanwhile, Fiorentina scored six against the team we only beat after extra time.
