The extent of the battle against injuries and selection problems that Milan have had to deal with this season has been perfectly summaries.
Milan were without a number of players for last night’s game against Udinese at San Siro including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Hakan Calhanoglu, Ismael Bennacer and Mario Mandzukic. Davide Calabria, Alexis Saelemaekers and Fikayo Tomori were not included in the starting XI due to fatigue, while Sandro Tonali came off with a muscle problem at half time too.
As journalist Giovanni Capuano writes on Twitter, Milan’s injury list so far this season makes for grim reading. The following players have missed a substantial chunk of the season in Serie A: Bennacer (14), Ibrahimovic (10), Rebic (8), Kjaer (7), Calhanoglu (4), Romagnoli (4) and Saelemaekers (4).
These are seven Milan starters who have missed a total of 51 league games because of injuries or Covid, that’s 30% of the total. “Too much for anyone to deal with,” Capuano rightly claims.
Meanwhile, Transfermarkt documents how Milan have suffered around 36 separate Covid/injury absences to first team players this season.
That’s not even how many games have been missed.
