MN: Theo the latest to be infected by Milan’s penalty woes – the worrying record

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s penalty woes continued on Monday night as Theo Hernandez became the latest to miss from the spot during the dramatic 2-1 defeat against Spezia.

Towards the end of the first half with the game tied at 0-0, Rafael Leao won a penalty as he beat Provedel to a throw-in and Theo stepped up to take it despite the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the field, given the Frenchman had scored his previous one against Venezia. However, the outcome this time was not the same, as fact Theo rolled it wide.

Of course the contextual implication is key, because although Milan went on to take the lead a few minutes later anyway through Leao’s lob, they would go on to lose the game because of Agudelo and Gyasi’s second half strikes. It is also the eighth spot kick the Rossoneri have missed since the start of the 2020-21 season.

With Franck Kessie – who is Milan’s first penalty taker – currently out, Olivier Giroud, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Theo Hernandez have all taken one. Here is the list of 8 missed penalties by Milan in Serie A in the last year and a half:

➤ January 17, 2022: Theo Hernandez in Milan 1-2 Spezia
➤ January 6, 2022: Ibrahimovic in Milan 3-1 Rome
➤ September 12, 2021: Kessie in Milan 2-0 Lazio
➤ May 9, 2021: Kessie in Juventus 0-3 Milan
➤ January 30, 2021: Ibrahimovic in Bologna 1-2 Milan
➤ November 29, 2020: Kessie in Milan 2-0 Fiorentina
➤ November 8, 2020: Ibrahimovic in Milan 2-2 Verona
➤ October 17, 2020: Ibrahimovic in Inter 1-2 Milan (converted rebound)

  1. Theo has become more selfish than others.
He is not every game player.
    He plays one game
    He screw up 4 games.
I don’t know what can happen.
    Can you trust that guy.

    1. He has played 4-5 games as a captain now. In every match he has been better than before getting the captain’s armband. I’d say he’s been pretty damn consistent (and good) lately.
