Luka Modric is a pillar of the current AC Milan side, but at present there is uncertainty regarding whether he will remain beyond June.

Corriere dello Sport (via MN24) wites this morning that the future of Milan’s midfield passes through what Modric chooses to do. More specifically, Igli Tare’s summer transfer plan will largely depend on the Croatian’s decision at the end of the current season.

Having arrived in the summer of 2025, Modric signed a one-year contract expiring until June 2026. As part of it, there is the ‘unilateral option to extend the agreement for another season, until June 30, 2027’. Unlike most cases when the club makes the call, the player will make the decision.

Three key factors

If Modric decides to stay, Massimiliano Allegri could continue to count on a charismatic leader, allowing the club to divert funds to other departments. However, the final decision is not a given and will depend on three key elements.

Firstly is Milan’s final position in the table, and whether Champions League football is secured. Secondly is the outcome of the World Cup that he will play with Croatia. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the opinion of his family will weight too.

Despite his 40th birthday, Modric’s contribution to the Rossoneri has been exceptional so far, with one goal and three assists. His ability to manage the game and his athleticism have astonished everyone.

The paper adds: “At 40, Modric boasts extraordinary athleticism, impressing with his willingness to sacrifice himself in duels and running.” Allegri and the management’s dream is to keep him for a ‘final showcase in the Champions League’, a title he has already won six times in his career.

  1. His work rate surprised me…it is totally out of this world for a 40yr old. Certainly enough to give him some serious consideration for next season. Having said that we need to be mindful of the development of both Jash and Ricci, so there needs to be a clear plan on how we will managed these in tandem. Forza Milan.

  2. Sorry, Modric is great, but it’s better he leaves. Allegri would never drop him for Jashari and we’d risk losing him.

  3. He signs for a year extension and sold in January to move back to Croatia for a small fee. He plays for 6-months after the World Cup to get Jashari/Ricci enough time with UCL competition to see if we have to make another MF investment into the January window.

Unless the sell Leao and bring back Tonali, then he would be gone this summer.
