GdS: The three positions Milan must address in the summer and the major target

By Oliver Fisher -

There are three areas that the AC Milan management are looking at as they prepare to strengthen the squad ahead of next season, a report claims.

The 2022 summer transfer window continues to come under fire as so far only Malick Thiaw has really made a consistent contribution while the likes of Charles De Ketelaere, Sergino Dest, Aster Vranckx and Divock Origi continue to struggle for form and/or playing time.

That means the upcoming summer is crucial and according to what is being reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan’s budget will depend largely on whether qualification for the next edition of the Champions League is secured, while reaching the quarter-finals this season would help.

Either way, the team has at least three clear needs: a new centre-forward, a new right winger and a central midfielder. In terms of reinforcing the attack, the name that intrigues the most is Noah Okafor of Red Bull Salzburg (10 goals in 27 games this season) as per the paper.

  1. I’m not sure all of these positions really need to be addressed with our new 3-4-3 system (if we stick to it). Midfielder is the priority IMO. If we keep Brahim, he can share the RW position with CDK. An experienced player in that position can be beneficial too, especially someone who can guide CDK. Maybe someone with experience in Italy, a “Di Maria” type of player.

Honestly, I think of our front 3 as a rotating machine. While in the game, your position doesn’t really matter as long as you are occupying space. With an experienced right winger and Noah as additional attackers (Assuming Rebic is leaving, as it is likely) we will have plenty in that area.

The rest would be reinforcements and depth in the CB and WB positions.

  2. Of these three positions, the one in which there is the most urgency for a major reinforcement is undoubtedly a new centre-forward.

    1. Personally, I think CM is also as important as a new CF. We usually struggled when one of Tonali and Bennacer isn’t playing and can’t really expect them to last the whole seasons. Purchasing one who would challenge Tonali and Bennacer for the spot would benefit us.

Curiously IMHO, with 3-4-2-1, the RW position shouldn’t be a priority anymore. That RWB slot is tailor-made for Saelemakers, and Messias has been doing respectably well too. I think even Calabria should be suited as well, and so is Florenzi.

In terms of priority next season, I think it should be:

      1. Central Mid
      2. CF
      3. A respectable sub for Theo

CF is interesting as we actually have Giroud, Ibra, Origi, Colombo and Lazetic. So, it really depends on what’s the plan regarding these players for next season. Do we completely revamp, will Ibra retire, will Colombo/Lazetic be trusted, and will Origi finally settle or get sold?

  3. With formation 352. You dont need RW anymore but RWB . Okafor are LW, we dont need him .Striker : Giroud,Ibra(not sure he want retire or not),Origi,Lazetic. SS : Leao,Rebic,CDK. Give lazetic or colombo playtime & you dont need buy expensive CF. We need italian LWB that can compete with theo ( for homegrown slot too) , italian CB that can provide competition ( you dont want end up with kjaer & gabbia just for back up )

    1. I think we need italian winger like Berardi. Maybe he got cheaper this summer. At least we wont concede any goal from him if he’s ours.

  4. Our biggest need is a midfielder that can pass the ball.
If you sign someone that can actually distribute in the middle of the park everyone else will look better.
You can sign Haaland if you want but unless you have someone who can give Haaland passes he would be useless.

    1. “You can sign Haaland if you want but unless you have someone who can give Haaland passes he would be useless.”

EXACTLY!!! The issue is the quality and quantity of scoring chances – not the one finishing them. If you look at the stats, the conversion ratio is decent with the players we’ve got but the chances are lacking.

  5. We need a new LW as well. But the most important player would be a creative midfielder. We need more scoring chances and those come via creative players with good passing skills. We don’t have any of those.
