TMW: Milan looking at four defensive targets in January across multiple leagues

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are looking at four different defensive targets that could be brought into the club during the January transfer window as they look to solve the injury crisis.

According to Niccolo Ceccarini’s piece for TMW (via Pianeta Milan), the Rossoneri are now very busy ensuring that they have enough defensive options for the rest of the season.

It was already clear that some more depth was needed but the injuries to Pierre Kalulu and Marco Pellegrino have intensified the situation.

One of the players being looked at is Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, but the Premier League side are not keen on losing him, even though his contract will be up at the end of the season. Tottenham attempted to sign him in the summer.

Over in France, there is Montpellier defender Maxime Esteve, who has been linked with Milan for a long time. A fee over €6-7 million could be enough to sign him.

Another slightly more expensive option would be PAOK’s Konstantinos Koulierakis. At least €10 million would be needed for the 2003-born star.

At left-back, the chances of signing Real Betis’ Juan Miranda continue to grow.

  1. Just go for Miranda and Koulierakis. I’ve gotten the impression that the budget is tight because money is being reserved for a striker, but what I would do is recall Colombo, even if it means giving Monza a “termination fee”. It the overall outlay for those two defenders and Colombo will be much less than spending 40m for the failing Jonathan David.

  2. Because Gabbia is just so awful we need to spend on random players instead….? So dumb, just bring the guy back, he’s always been decent for us and sometimes has even had some great games and he’s still young.

    1. There’s something about Pioli and signing of strangers even if the academy players are far better than the signings… Colombo would have been better than Jovic, and Gabbia better than Pellegrino but Pioli choose the latter in both cases .

    2. Kind of the same situation as Colombo. Villareal has him on a season long loan and there probably isn’t an early termination provision. He’s getting minutes, and I think for him in particular it’s important, as he’s already 24. Unlikely Villareal would terminate early even if a fee is offered. We could try, I guess.
