Tomori believes early struggles set the tone vs. Inter: “We had to start the match better”

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has insisted that AC Milan did not show anywhere close to their full capabilities during the first leg against Inter.

Tomori was one of several Milan players who had a torrid time on the night as Inter struck twice early on and could have been out of sight by the break. The movements of Lautaro, Dzeko, Dimarco and Mkhitaryan caused havoc, and the Rossoneri just could not restore order.

Although things calmed down and Stefano Pioli’s side did look better in the second half, it is now a very tough task to qualify for the final in Istanbul with a two-goal deficit to try and overturn in next week’s return leg.

Tomori was interviewed by UEFA and was asked to reflect on what was a tough night for him and his team-mates, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Obviously conceding from a corner after a few minutes was not the way we wanted to start the match. And then after conceding the other goal the game became even more difficult for us,” he said.

“I think we didn’t start the match as we wanted and it got more complicated from there. We knew they are a good team, we knew it was going to be a difficult game and after the going two behind it became even more difficult.

“We’re sorry, but it’s only the first leg and we have to believe it in view of the return. We will have to enter the field without anxiety and fear, we just have to play our game and believe that we can go through.

“I think we had to start the match better, that’s the first thing. They were more alive in the first half, on the first balls and on the second balls. At the same time, however, we too had opportunities.

“Not sensational chances, but we had chances to score goals and if we had been a little more determined in what we were doing we could have scored and the match could have gone differently.

“But in the end we lost 2-0 and now we only have to think about the second game knowing that we didn’t play at our level in the first leg and that we have to play better in the second leg.”
