CM: Tomori and Maignan struggle as Milan’s defensive issues are exposed again

By Oliver Fisher -

The defensive phase has become a problem for AC Milan, who conceded twice against bottom of the league Salernitana last night and were held to a draw.

Calciomercato.com describes the game as a trap that Milan slipped into by themselves, wasting a huge opportunity to send a message to Inter and Napoli as they were held at the Stadio Arechi in a game that feels like a defeat due to the lapses in concentration, the inattentiveness and the wasted chances.

Milan concede too many goals, having let in 2 against Salernitana, Sassuolo and Spezia, and those players they thought were certainties such as Mike Maignan and Fikayo Tomori even fell victim to distraction and had poor performances.

Simon Kjaer’s absence absence is making itself felt especially in terms of leadership, and it is a problem to which Pioli must immediately find a solution, namely on Friday when the Rossoneri return to the field against Udinese.

  1. Milan don’t have “defensive issues”. Tomori is a great defender and Maignan a great keeper. People have bad days, this is sports. And sometimes you see these performances against weaker sides because the motivation is not there. This is not a bigger issue than simply making a few mistakes. This has nothing to do woth Kjaer and we need to not overreact. So if Kjaer was starting over Romagnoli Maignan wouldn’t have been risky and made a mistake? Or Tomori would have boxed out better in the air v Djuric?? No. This is not a big problem. Things happen. We bounce back. The athletes are human. That’s it.

  2. I think the issue is concentration..against small team or team that just defend & try to counter will be a problem if they not fully concentrate..& if kjaer or ibra play, they will always make sure all other player concentrate enough, sometimes ibra cannot ask defender to play their part as he is striker, always up but not kjaer..that why kjaer are very important for our defender mentality..last time our captain is romagnoli, not to disrespect him,but kjaer are better captain material, last time he show to us he a good defender but not really a good captain..if he leaves on free, i really cannot blame maldini as he is worth what our club offer..same as kessie, for 6m/season, he should really be in same bracket as kjaer & ibra, in term of mentality & sporting
