Torriani humble after shootout ‘roulette’: “The coach gave me a great opportunity”

By Oliver Fisher -

Lorenzo Torriani was once again one of the best performers for AC Milan during their friendly against FC Barcelona in Baltimore, but he conceded there is a bit of luck behind penalty shootouts.

Milan ended their preseason tour of the United States with a 2-2 draw against Barcelona in what was very much a game of two halves. The Rossoneri raced out to a fast start with goals from Luka Jovic and Christian Pulisic, but Roberto Lewandowski’s brace got Barca back level.

The game went to penalties given that it was tied 2-2 after 90 minutes, and Torriani made a couple of saves including the decisive one after Kevin Zeroli had scored when it went to sudden death. That was in addition to making some fantastic stops during the game, too.

The 19-year-old spoke to Milan TV at the end of the game to reflect on what was a very positive tour both for him personally given his levels of performance – especially after his shootout heroics – but also a good few weeks for the team too.

“The coach gave me a great opportunity. I think I took advantage of it almost perfectly, right? Even though there is a lot to improve,” he said.

“Penalties at the end, they are like roulette, aren’t they? So one time it can go well, maybe another time it can go badly. This time it went well, luckily.

“It was a great game. They were a good team and they really pressed harder than the others. But, come on, in the end it went well.”

      1. I am hoping for some Serie-B teams who would pick him up and grant him minutes. Young goalies (or any other players actually) need the valuable minutes under their belt and it’s not hard to imagine that there would be some interested parties from lower league after seeing how he performed against City, Madrid and Barca.

        1. How many players have we sent to Serie B never to return?

Most of the youth players who have broken into the first team never went on loan.

          Abate was probably the last.

Gabbia doesn’t really count because he was an accident brought back during an injury crisis.

De Sciglio, Donnarumma, Calabria, Locatelli, and Cutrone never went on loan.

Whenever we’ve loaned players it’s basically ended their careers at Milan.

  1. This guy has the confidence and the calm of an experienced elite GK already, we had Donnaruma as a starter when he was a teenager and it worked out extremely well. I agree with management that the young lads need to be protected and have some time in serie C but this guy is ready and we shouldn’t be over protective
