Tuttosport: Why Milan are more likely than Inter to register an U23 team

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are pushing ahead to have an U23 team registered in Serie C in time for next season, a report claims, taking a different path compared to their city rivals.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) confirms that Milan want to follow in the footsteps of Juventus with their Next Gen team and Atalanta too, who also have a development side playing in Serie C.

To date, Milan are in pole position to join Juventus and Atalanta in the third tier of Italian football given that there are various parameters involved before registration for Serie C can be confirmed.”

They are: place in last season’s standings, number of spectators and the number of players called up to the national team between Under 15 and Under 21. Inter are ahead of Milan in those areas but the Nerazzurri are not interested in an U23 team at the moment.

There have also been recent contacts between the Rossoneri leadership and Matteo Marani – who is the President of Lega Pro – regarding the creation of a Milan U23 team.

However, to register in Serie C at least one of the teams eligible but not in possession of the requirements, mainly financial, would need to leave.

Why are Milan pushing so hard for a ‘B-Team’? The internal development of their players without having to send them on loan to other teams mainly, especially in view of the fact UEFA will soon impose stricter limits regarding loans.
