More concerning developments continue to filter after AC Milan’s defeat against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi last night, including Christian Pulisic’s reaction to coming off.
It was not a good night at all for Milan as they fell to a second straight defeat after losing to Bayer Leverkusen in midweek. They failed to convert two penalties that Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham took, then Fikayo Tomori made an error before Albert Gudmundsson’s winner.
What dominates the headlines this morning is the fact that Paulo Fonseca confirmed after the game that neither Theo nor Abraham were meant to take penalties, because Pulisic is the designated man from the spot.
Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) has the following headline this morning: “Pulisic to Fonseca: ‘Why, why?’.” The newspaper recalls the anger of the American winger when he found out that he and Rafael Leao were both coming off when the team needed a goal.
After the match, the Milan coach explained the substitution of the former Chelsea man and that of Leao as follows: “The substitution of Rafa was my choice. I wanted more depth with Okafor. I was afraid for Pulisic because he had a problem with his flexor during the week.”

Very few players want to come off when their team is down a goal. BFD. Pulisic will be ok because he is a team player.
Fonseca’s subs in general didn’t make much sense to me and the 4-2-4 should be an option, not a mandatory setup game in and game out.
Why is Tammy being kept it 90mns when he’s clearly ineffective, yet Pulisic, who’s busy up and down the wing, scores a goal for you?
I agree, Tammy is a striker who can’t finish, we need to drop this 4-2-4/4-4-2 talk and get Morata up front. I much rather have RLC on the pitch than Tammy.
This coach is sleeping on Musah a player who can play number ten with speed and power and tactical and can be used as a cm Milan will regret how this lad is treated.
While Pulisic was playing a fantastic game, and I understand his frustration, if he really did have a tight abductor during training, then Fonseca was right to pull him. With his injury history, the last thing you want to do is risk another hamstring pull. That would ruin all the confidence he has been building over last season and this season. However his excuse for pulling Leao is nonsense.
