Referee Paride Tremolada has been criticised for some of the decisions that he made during AC Milan’s Coppa Italia win over Lecce.
La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write that it was ‘a bad night for Tremolada’. In the 13th minute, Milan called for a penalty when Christopher Nkunku went down after a collision with Siebert. It wasn’t enough for a penalty, so the referee was right to wave the appeals away.
Three minutes later, Siebert brought down Nkunku again, and Tremolada made a double mistake in this particular moment. The first issue is that he didn’t play on when Santiago Gimenez was alone in front of goal (he missed anyway, but fans will remember the Junior Messias vs. Spezia precedent).
Then the other error was that he showed the Lecce defender a yellow card. It was a clear goal-scoring opportunity, but only after a VAR intervention was Siebert sent off.

Santiago Gimenez would go on to open the scoring on the night not long after the red card. Then, Christopher Nkunku and Christian Pulisic both scored in the second half in an eventual 3-0 victory. It allowed Milan to get the job done with no drama, ahead of Sunday’s big one against Napoli.

This article is even worse than the referee… guys come on.
The red card was not because of a clear goal scoring opportunity, so he couldn’t miss that, since there was none. The red card was for the harsh faul, similar red card was given to the bartesaghi last season. These fauls are commonly reviewed by the VAR, I did not see any misstake from the referee.
Actually if a player is fouled by the last defender its a direct red card automatically as it always has been as its cheating the attacking player for an open chance so in such situation, its not about intent or severity. Obviously a player can be tackled directly with studs from behind which also should award a direct red card, the foul against Nkunku was by no extent severe if anything it looked clumsy.
100% agree. It’s a clumsy foul by the last defender, but that (last in line) is much better seen on video than on the field. I have no hard feelings for the ref in this case – that’s why there is VAR. Not to overrule a clear penalty…
Absolutely and me neither as I thought the first scenario didn’t look as a clearcut penalty and at the second one I actually initially thought he would reverse the yellow card and yellow card Nkunku instead for diving but at a closer look there was contact so the red card was fully just. Overall Tremolada did a pretty decent job in my view.
That ref was chill. Was sharing a laugh with Pavlović even as he carded him. Plus, unlike the Messias situation, he blew early and Santi took the shot and missed. We need to move on from whatever ptsd we’ve suffered from past refereeing errors! We’ve got a team firing on all cylinders since God knows when so our fate is in our hands for once! Forza Milan always.
