Tuttosport: The two-fold impact that Bennacer’s return vs. Roma will have for Milan

Ismael Bennacer is expected to feature in Sunday’s game against AS Roma at San Siro, and his return will have a two-fold impact.

Bennacer returned to training with the rest of the squad three days ago, taking part in the entire session at Milanello that morning. What it means is that he is now in the final phase of his recovery after a calf operation a few months ago, and he could be back on the pitch in a few days.

As Tuttosport (via MilanPress) report this morning, the return of Bennacer can be useful both for on and off-field reasons. Firstly, Paulo Fonseca is a great admirer of the skillset that the Algerian has, and it will allow him to rotate the midfield more effectively.

The coach found himself having to make adjustments like using Filippo Terracciano in the double pivot as he did against Verona, but even in this case both Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders started the game so didn’t get any rest.

Regarding matters away from the field, Bennacer’s return could reignite the Saudi Arabia rumours that were swirling in the summer. Alternatively, he could show that he can still contribute for Milan at the highest level, and force reflections on the planned January midfield signing.

  1. Unfortunately, Bennascer’s career at the top level is most likely over. There’s a small chance that he regains his previous form, but most players don’t ever really comeback to their old selves after two such injuries (even one). We need to be prepared for that situation.

  2. I need to see that he doesn’t look like an overstuffed sausage coming back from rehab this time. If he is a bowling ball, then the clock ticks on him taking another serious injury. Clearly his body couldn’t carry the extra weight last time.

That said, I don’t think he is washed up if he shows up in the Roma game at fighting weight and 80% or more match fitness.

    Here is hoping.

  3. Man played one game after our Mercato closed on August 31st and went down like a sack of potatoes.

Unless he can prove that he’s back to his best in the next few matches, I say sell him and bring in Ricci.
We have too much unused Italian spots and zero foreigner spots on our team list. Even if the papers keep talking about bringing in foreigners, we don’t even have the capacity to do so unless we sell our current foreigners.

Jovic out, RLC out, Chukwueze out, Okafor out, who else?

    1. It was easy, back than, for Red Bird to bring new players, because of Growth Decree.

But now, all they can buy would be players that we never heard of them.

  4. I mean I do like Bennacer as a player. However, he has proven season after season that he can only be relied upon for half a season on average. He is always out injured. I think Milan need to cut their losses short on this one unfortunately if we get an offer from Saudi. We need new blood in midfield – hopefully a proven leader and not young one who will show his worth after 30 seasons. Milan needs instant impact players in defense, attach and in the CAM position.
