Udinese midfielder explains why rejecting Milan and Barcelona was ‘a good choice’

By Oliver Fisher -

Udinese midfielder Lazar Samardzic has confirmed that AC Milan tried to sign him in the past and revealed why he decided to reject the idea.

Milan’s interest in signing the then-18-year-old was reported for weeks during the summer of 2020 by a number of different sources. He was at Hertha Berlin at that time where he had a contract until 2024 but was looking for a fresh opportunity after struggling for game time in the German capital.

However, in September 2020, Samardžić joined fellow Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on a five-year deal. After making his debut a month later, he found himself struggling for playing time once again, making just seven appearances for them before signing a five-year deal with Udinese in summer 2021.

Samardzic revealed to La Gazzetta dello Sport that he was indeed in talks over a potential move to Milan as well as Barcelona, with his comments relayed by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it.

“We came to Milan with the whole family. We talked to Paolo Maldini, but I didn’t feel like having an experience in a big city at that time. Barcelona came to my house instead. With Patrick Kluivert. But I chose Leipzig, it was an hour from home. And it was a good choice,” he said.

  1. I don’t know who but good for him i guess 🤷‍♂️

It’s not like he can replace Bennacer and Kessie either if he join Milan back in 2020.
