GdS: No Zaniolo or Ziyech – Pioli must get the most from the summer additions

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli must make do with the squad that he currently has as reinforcements for the attack are not expected to arrive before the end of January.

As reported today by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), the Rossoneri management attempted in the last few days of the winter mercato to strike a deal for Nicolò Zaniolo. The opportunity was too tempting not to try in the eyes of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara, who both hold the winger in high esteem.

However, there is not much left in the budget that was made available at the beginning of the season by the owners, who have no intention of adding additional funding for the current window.

Milan thus declared themselves out of the race for Zaniolo, especially because it was impossible to match Bournemouth’s €30m, but then the idea of going back to Hakim Ziyech emerged.

This too remains a very difficult pursuit because the Moroccan has a high salary for which not even the Growth Decree could help, as Milan would sign the player on loan while these benefits can only be used for a permanent deal.

Without any additions, Pioli will have to turn to his bench and see who he can make the most of. For example, Malick Thiaw only played two games as a starter but did well, just as he did well when he came on in the final minutes against Verona.

Aster Vranckx showed good things when he came on against Fiorentina, while Charles De Ketelaere is in obvious mental difficulty and really needs a turning point to be unlocked, and Divock Origi too needs to start contributing and allow Olivier Giroud to manage his workload more.

  1. Thankfully Zyiech is not available on Loan so there is no way Milan will get him. 30 year old with a 18 year olds mind, never liked him as a player.
