GdS: Ziyech vs. De Ketelaere – a statistical comparison of Milan’s two targets

AC Milan continue to be linked with Charles De Ketelaere and Hakim Ziyech to reinforce the attack, but which profile would be better?

La Gazzetta dello Sport have provided a comparison between the two from a statistical point of view in the 2021-22 season, starting with appearances across all competitions which is 49 to 44 in favour of De Ketelaere. The Belgian also has more goals (18 to 8) and assists (11 to 6), but of course he plays his league football in the Juliper Pro League not the Premier League.

They both had 17 big chances created, Ziyech had more shots on goal per game (2.2 to 2), De Ketelaere had more key passes per match (1.8 to 1.6), more attempted dribbles per match (1.4 to 1.2), more duels won per match (5.4 to 3.6) and more tackles won per match (1.4 to 0.8).

De Ketelaere has the edge on most numbers but of course signing Ziyech would mean securing a player who has already won a Champions League and who already has considerable international experience.

At first glance, De Ketelaere would seem to cover more of the pitch due to the ability to play both on the right and on the left, but Ziyech, however starts from the right to concentrate and move between the position of being a No.7 and a No.10 – exactly the type of player that Stefano Pioli has been looking for.

  1. De Ketelaere should go to Leeds. He will be a star there, he will continue to develop, and Milan will still be there in 2 or 3 years. He needs Leeds almost as much as they need him.

    1. Leeds do not have Champions League and they are worse than Club Brugge, a playmaker need good teammates who can benefit from him.

    1. 100%, there’s no reason on earth not to choose CDK over Ziyech….

Still….who are we to argue with ‘the algorithm’ 🙄

  2. Ziyech being a Plan B is either the pinnacle of stupidity from this club, or media bullsh*t.

Ziyech should 100%, beyond any doubt, be IN ADDITION to CDK.

We need a 10 and a RW. What is this absolutely poppycock?

    1. Absolutely bro, and the fact that we can get Ziyech on a loan with obligation to buy/option is even better because we can do a low initial so I don’t understand why we wouldn’t get both I already can hear people saying “maybe the wage???” He wants to take a wage cut to join us…

      1. He can take a wage cut only if Milan buys him outright.
Since he would be coming on initial loan, to take a wage cut he would have to first sign a new contract extension with Chelsea that would pay him less money.
Is Chelsea willing to do that if Milan only wants option and not an obligation to but, because that way Chelsea would be stuck for an extra year with Ziyech if Milan doesn’t buy him next summer

    1. Maybe transfer cost, but both of them would be looking for at least 2x what CDK would earn in salary. And neither would have much value in a couple of years due to their age, whereas CDK has the potential to be worth more in 3 years’ time. And that’s why talk of “€Xm transfer budget” is bull poop.

    2. Isn’t Depay a LW and a striker? We’re already well covered in those positions. Plus his salary demands would conflict with the salary cap.

  3. Call me optimistic but I think we’ll get both CDK+Ziyech. Then wait til the end of the window and sign Acerbi as backup CB for €2mn. Yes an unpopular choice but he will count towards the homegrown quota and Lazio desperate to offload him.

In winter, if we’re still in UCL they’ll look at a midfield rotation player, next summer 2023 when Kjaer/Giroud/Ibra retires or moves on we’ll use that budget for a top striker and CB

    1. simon kjær has two years remaining on his contract, giroud has an option for another year implemented within his contract.

  4. I hope we can sign both of them but be realistic after see elliot so tough just about give 1-5m euro more offer for CDK , only ziyech i think will come as loan player. The budget for CDK can allocate to ndicka and new DMF player

  5. I hope we can sign both of them but be realistic after see elliot so tough just about give 1-5m euro more offer for CDK , only ziyech i think will come as loan player. The budget for CDK can allocate to ndicka and new DMF player ( not renato i hope)

  6. I hope we can sign both of them but be realistic after see elliot so tough just about give 1-5m euro more offer for CDK , only ziyech i think will come as loan player. The budget for CDK can allocate to ndicka and new DMF player ( not renato i hope). Just blame elliot if we failed to get CDK

  7. CDK wont come, just look in past simakan, faivre, kone with different few million (2-5m euro) failed because elliot so tough. Focusing on loan ziyech more better and use that CDK budget to buy ndicka & new DMF

  8. Hahahaha stop this. Ziyech had promise and has done nothing and is almost 30. No thanks. Cdk has all the potential and time in the world to get there. Such an easy choice

    1. Ziyech has won the UCL though. And has pretty good stats in EPL last season. If the price is right, he could be useful. At least MORE USEFUL than Messias & Saele.

  9. CDK masih muda… Prospek , brilian….

Mending bijimu yg seratus motor kali

  10. A comparison like that, not taking into consideration the average of minutes played per game or ignoring that CDK played most of the season as a forward or second striker whereas Ziyech played mostly as RW or AM, has very little value.

    1. I agree that comparison should be per minuted instead of per match. As the position, the map shows that CdK spent more times on the flank instead of center-forward. Perhaps Milan plan to play him as RW while Adli is the AM.

      1. True, but it doesnt really matter much where CDK spent most of the time, the fact he was the team’s forward regardless of his mobility made the rest of the team play and associate with him in a much way than Ziyech’s context in Chelsea, simply because they are different players who had different roles, so the comparison doesn’t make much sense. The problem with Messias is not his stats in UCL, his problem is simply quality; he doesn’t have what it takes to be a starter in that position quality wise, the other two players being compared do, so Ziyech and De Ketelaere’s stats are more important to look into than Messias even if Messias had better stats than he does, because the whole purpose of the comparison is that both players are superior to Messias in terms of quality or can bring more to the table than he does.

    2. And one more thing, per minute wise, Messias has far better goal and assist ratio than Ziyech in Champions League.

  11. buy Maurits Kjærgaard, already some UCL minutes and in 2years better then CDK – develpoing wtf – nothing learnd from Kalulu u clueless itxx

  12. the comparison is silly because not only they play different positions; but PL is far far more difficult league than Belgian league. Ziyech is far more proven, obviously, and was trained in the fantastic Ajax Academy — so he is a smart player and all Ajax academy players know how to press well which Pioli likes.
CDK has “upside potential” being the younger player; but it is a much bigger question mark and risk. Will he actually develop into such a great player like many think/hope? We really just don’t know.
