Official: Conceicao decides to renew with Porto as Milan’s options decrease

By Euan Burns -

Sergio Conceicao has renewed his contract as FC Porto coach despite being linked with AC Milan and a host of other jobs in European football.

As has been officially announced by the Portuguese club, Conceicao is going to remain in his position until at least 2028. If he sees this contract through to the end, he will have been in charge for 11 years which is very rare in the modern game.

Conceicao had two spells as a player at Porto, as well as impressing for both Lazio and Inter. Barring a spell at Nantes in France, his entire managerial career has been spent in Portugal.

He has been heavily linked with the Lazio job given Igor Tudor is not viewed as a long-term replacement for Maurizio Sarri. He was also linked with Bayern Munich and Barcelona, but the speculation has been put to bed with this new contract.

For Milan, this news means that there is one less name available. With Stefano Pioli expected to leave at the end of the season, names like Julen Lopetegui, Domenico Tedesco, Paulo Fonseca and many more have been linked.

It is not clear where Conceicao ranked among those other coaches for Milan but he has certainly narrowed down the search slightly.

    1. If we keep Pioli due to lack of a decent alternative, then that *might* mean we are trying for Klopp once he finishes his break to recover from burnout.

I know I know… very hypothetical but there’s an outside chance. We have the name and its a new league for Klopp to try, I’m assuming the Inter and Juve jobs won’t be available (Inzaghi to continue his success and Motta to settle in Turin)
