Big-game struggles and Giroud’s header: All the key stats from Atalanta-Milan

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan failed to clinch three points against Atalanta on Saturday evening, instead losing the game by three goals to two. The Rossoneri struggled at the back and the stats show it, giving the home side way too many good chances.

Stefano Pioli and his men came back from behind twice but it wasn’t enough to snatch a point at Gewiss Stadium. Atalanta deservedly came away with all three points, it should be pointed out, and for Milan it was two steps back.

There are a few key stats from the game to dig into, so let’s take a look.

Overall stats

Milan had a lot of possession throughout the game, especially in the first half, but failed to make the most of it. Atalanta, on the other hand, were very efficient when going forward and created several good chances on top of their three goals.

Giroud’s header and Jovic’s second

Oliver Giroud made his return in the league, following a two-game suspension, and responded with a great header to make it 1-1. It was his eighth header since the start of 2023, and no player has managed more in Europe’s top five leagues (Harry Kane also has eight).

Furthermore, Luka Jovic bagged his second consecutive goal and Milan will be hoping that this is the start of something good for the Serbian. There are still four games between now and January, so he will have time to impress the management before the window.

Record in big games

Under the management of Pioli, Milan have had their fair share of troubles in big games, especially against Inter. Yesterday was another example of that, collapsing as Atalanta managed to overwhelm the Rossoneri.

This is something that must be fixed, and quickly as well. The game against Newcastle on Wednesday, in fact, could decide the manager’s future with the club.
