Bonucci: “We can no longer afford to make mistakes”

By Anthony Torgrude -

Captain Bonucci spoke with Sky Sports after the 2-1 defeat to league leaders Napoli. This is what he had to say.

“I think we look at the positive things, today we have played in equal numbers with Napoli playing for the scudetto. I want to improve what is missing. In great games apart from Sampdoria and Lazio we did well, you have to make a leap of courage and self-esteem. That’s what we are missing. We have to make a leap.”

When asked about the games left in the season Leonardo sent  warning to his team: “Matches must always be played, nothing is given to us. We can no longer afford to make mistakes, there is not many points this month and getting only half would be deadly.”

The topic then shifted towards the national team after Italy failed to qualify for the world cup.

“The anger for what has been is there and will always be, we have failed something unique. It is a shame, we put all of them back on. We are lacking in quality and talent, these things are not there and they have led to the World Cup, beyond the talents, though few, in the teams, has to change. Italian football must improve, thinking to go ahead in this way is deleterious to all of them. Finding a single culprit is ugly and ridiculous, if we got to this point the faults are to be split, it’s not just the fault of the coach. We as players have always made it available to us. We have left something since 2006 , the others grow up, we always rely on good luck, it is not the time, now we have to pull together and propose something important. Sacking the coach would be of low level.  Ancelotti – his career speaks for itself and would surely give a big hand to the development of Italian football.”
