Calabria reveals VAR wasn’t working during Milan-Napoli as questions arise

AC Milan claimed an important 1-0 win in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. However, it didn’t come without controversy, including the fact that VAR wasn’t working properly throughout the game.

The officiating, courtesy of Istvan Kovacs, was rather inconsistent throughout the game and both teams had complaints at the end. Speaking to Prime Video, as cited by MilanNews, Davide Calabria revealed that VAR wasn’t working.

“Throughout the game, the referee told me and Di Lorenzo that the VAR worked and then that it didn’t work, we didn’t understand. To me, it seemed like a penalty on Saelemaekers,” he stated.

There was one incident towards the end of the first half, just as Simon Kjaer hit the bar, in which Rade Krunic was clearly brought down to the ground in the box. Then, in the second half, Alexis Saelemaekers was brought down by Lobotka.

It would be interesting to know if VAR was working during any of these incidents. As for Anguissa’s red card, however, VAR couldn’t have intervened anyway since it was two yellow cards – not to mention the fact that both fouls were worthy of a yellow.

  1. Sometimes we dont need VAR assistant, so we can count on referree intuition. The match more live, more deep, more loud and harsh. So thats we called football…

  2. No suprise, at the start of 2nd half ref had trouble with his comm kit, and his gesture suggest he didnt satisfied when someone trying to fix it. So he went on lead the 2nd half on his own, maybe he would give milan penalty for lobotka foul if he didnt just give red and fatal yellow card to napoli players lol
