Calhanoglu insists he ‘respects’ Milan: “I congratulated them on winning the Scudetto”

By Oliver Fisher -

Hakan Calhanoglu has revealed that he congratulated AC Milan after their Scudetto win at the of last season, adding that he has ‘respect’ for the club.

Calhanoglu joined Milan from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2017 as part of a big spending spree by the Chinese ownership. After seeing Inter pip the Rossoneri to the Scudetto in the 2020-21 season, he decided to leave and cross the city divide but then had to watch Milan win the league last season with his new club.

There has always been some tension surrounding the move, with MilanNews reporting earlier this season that Pioli hung a photo of Calhanoglu with the quote ‘We have fire inside’ (which he said before the game) to motivate his team ahead of the 3-2 derby win, while there was also an angry exchange involving Theo Hernandez.

Calhanoglu spoke during an interview with Corriere della Sera and he was asked about the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana clash between the two Milanese clubs that will take place in Saudi Arabia, with his response relayed by Calciomercato.com.

“The finals are special, and we play them with a different spirit. I respect Milan, I have a good relationship with Pioli, Maldini and Massara. As a gentleman, I congratulated them on winning the Scudetto last season. Friends have no colours. But for me that’s the past, now I’m only thinking about Inter,” he said.
