CorSport: April the crucial month for the Supercoppa – the details

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan are currently in second place in Serie A, and if they can finish the season in this position, they will qualify for the 2024-25 Supercoppa Italia. However, a report has claimed that their eligibility to participate may change in a bid to tackle football’s problem with calendar congestion.

With the current set-up of the Supercoppa, the Scudetto winner and winner of the Coppa Italia qualify directly into the competition, with the second-place team in Serie A and the Coppa Italia runner-up also gaining entry.

Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) have reported that in this morning’s Lega Assembly, a date has been pencilled in for the competition – between the 3rd and 7th of January 2025. However, a decision about how many participants the Supercoppa will have will be made in April by the 20 Serie A presidents.

The alternative to four sides is making the competition a one-off game between the Scudetto holders and winners of the Coppa Italia, therefore removing some of the extra fixture congestion for two sides.

Whilst this is a positive for the players, this could be frowned upon by some clubs, given the financial incentives brought by the competition. A place in the competition opens another revenue stream worth up to €24 million, which will be difficult to walk away from.

  1. The clubs can’t complain about the amount of games being played as long as greed is a prime motivator. To have a made up cup in the middle of the season like this is just stupid. Especially if it’s played in a far away country.

If it were before the league began to get some game time in before the season begins would have made more sense. But I guess thay can’t play in Saidi arabia in august because of the heat…
