GdS: Fonseca, Lopetegui and ‘Mr. X’ – Milan working through list of coaches

By Ben Dixon -

If Stefano Pioli was to continue as AC Milan manager next season, it was pivotal that the games against AS Roma ended with qualification into the final four of the Europa League, and the Derby della Madonnina didn’t end with Inter raising their 20th Scudetti. However, neither scenario played out that way.

You could argue that the writing has been on the wall since the early stages of the season for Pioli, as even through the recent upturn in form, there were rumblings about his future and reports that Milan were looking at replacements.

However, now, the writing is very much on the wall, and it reads bleakly for the 58-year-old. For the club, though, perhaps, it reads as a new lease of life and a chance to move forward on the foundations that Pioli has to be credited for building.

Currently, as revealed by Gazzetta dello Sport, there are two frontrunners for the job: Paulo Fonseca – who could lead LOSC Lille to a Champions League place this season, and Julen Lopetegui, who is currently unemployed after a brief stint with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Additionally, Christophe Galtier and Marcelo Gallardo are named as alternate candidates.

The Spaniard has met with the club recently, with reports suggesting that he had a positive meeting with Gerry Cardinale, but there remains some convincing to do before an appointment is made. However, he has waited for Milan so far, the report suggests.

The other option remains unknown, hence the ‘Mr. X’ codename. It is believed that there is a possibility that an alternate candidate could be approached, maybe pushed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

    1. Foreign players foreign manager, we are perfectly placed for returning to the benter era. This is what you get when you do not have football related people in the sporting department. Maybe Gerry should try some AI to run the club.

  1. They can’t even get some new talented manager. Forget the big managers. It seems they are only replacing Pioli for the sake of replacing, to keep the fans quiet and give them some false hope that something is changing. In reality we will be fighting for top 4 in Italy next year again and have zero ambition for something more. Don’t be supriced if our stars start leaving as well.

  2. “Mr. X” mann long time I haven’t heard of that. Brings back Galliani vibes. Maybe we should try for Hamsik but apparently after all this time, we still can’t afford a loaf of bread 🤭 (IYKYK)

  3. If milan really appoint one of those coaches listed above then i am sure that milan will need years to achieve the second stars. Those coaches need more time to adaptation to serie A, different story if milan hire conte or motta may be in one or two years they will have the second stars..

  4. Well in my opinion, Milan now is not like Milan under Berlusconi.

Milan now is not willing to listen what fans expected.

So, for the new coach, I think will not come from familiar names, I think Abate will become Main Team Coach.

  5. Personally I’m not a fan of Paulo Fonseca at all. I think Lopetegui is a 4th-8th-position-team coach (we might as well get Vincenzo Italiano or Ivan Juric), and Gallardo has never coached in Europe, which is a concern.
Galtier is both a very good and a very tactically flexible coach, but we need familiarity with the Club and the League.
Any choice other than Thiago Motta is not ideal.
