GdS: 150 days to earn a contract – Jovic hard at work to secure Milan stay

By Oliver Fisher -

Luka Jovic has six months to convince the AC Milan management that he deserves a contract extension, and his burning desire is to do exactly that.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) write that the Milan fans have been pleading with the management to invest in a new striker and got excited by the links with Benjamin Sesko, Joshua Zirkzee and Jonathan David.

However, unless there are surprises a new centre-forward will not arrive in January. Milan has chosen to give priority to a centre-back for January and will only return to thinking about a striker if advantageous opportunities arise in the last few days of the month.

At Milanello, however, there is a No.9 disguised as a No.15 who is working to secure a future at the club. Jovic arrived on another last day of the summer window – September 1st – and in the first few months he disappointed everyone.

His worst match was probably the home defeat against Udinese, when Pioli sent him on the pitch from the start together with Giroud and the attack was completely missing in action.

However, things then changed: in December Jovic scored against Frosinone, Atalanta and Salernitana, in January he scored twice against Cagliari and he improved his condition, becoming a credible alternative to Giroud.

It is also thanks to him that Milan stopped looking so urgently for a centre-forward. In short, Jovic has earned himself another five months and now – from January to May – he has 150 days to earn a contract for next year too.

How will the attack of the future look? Giroud could sign a renewal but he is tempted by a move to the MLS. Nonetheless, the possibility of ‘New striker + Giroud + Jovic’ for 2024-25 remains.

In the meantime, the Serbia international might well be given the nod on Saturday night against Udinese given Giroud is struggling with the flu.
