GdS: Milan player ratings for Sampdoria win – Giroud MOTM; Leao pays for naivety

By Oliver Fisher -

A number of AC Milan players have received praise from La Gazzetta dello Sport this morning in their player ratings from the win over Sampdoria.

The paper (via SempreMilan) has given the team a score of 6.5 out of 10 overall, with head coach Stefano Pioli receiving the same score for his management of a game which became difficult after the red card.

Speaking of which, Rafael Leao is the flop of the match scoring a rating of just 4 after getting two yellow cards and leaving his team-mates with the entire second half to play a man down, while Olivier Giroud was awarded a 7 and the title of man of the match for his winning goal and overall performance.

Moving to the defence, Mike Maignan got a score of 6.5, with Davide Calabria getting a 6, Simon Kjaer and Pierre Kalulu getting the same and then Theo Hernandez earning a 7.

Sandro Tonali (6) and Tommaso Pobega (6.5) did an ok job in the double pivot, while Junior Messias got a 6.5 and Charles De Ketelaere got a 6. Fikayo Tomori, Aster Vranckx and Ismael Bennacer scored 6 for their performances off the bench.

  1. Lol, that’s just completely laughable. If Leao connects with the ball and scores he gets a 9, but because the defender was there he gets a 4!

And Pioli gets a 6.5…? What more could he possibly have done? Tired team, away from home, 10 men and he makes formation and personnel tweaks to a team which helps them regain a lead and then defend that lead, whilst all functioning as a superb team unit. And were completely on top before the red. I’d love to see how a manager gets that extra 3.5 score.

    1. But Leao missed and hit the defender in the face, which happens on 99% of those overhead kicks.
He got a 4 because he left his team a man down. Are they supposed to grade him until he is on the field? He wasn’t subbed off he was sent off. He almost cost the team the points.

  2. I agree that Pioli handled it very well. He deserved at least 9.
Leão should have been more careful because he was too close to the defender and he had already received a yellow card, but it’s understandable.

  3. No doubt at all in mind ,that Giroud was man of the match ,he hold up play was brilliant ( real class )
He could ,and possibly should have scored a goal in open play ,that said he made the penalty, and indeed scored brilliantly from the spot ..It was even more difficult when we went down to ten men…I thought leao was not that good at all ,and at times overdid things rather than deliver a decent cross into the box,and yes he got sent off ,which I believe was the correct decision…He is a class player ,and still very young ,,he will get even better, and is such an important player for AC Milan ,as will be Olivier Giroud,of course we will have to make some changes in the next couple of games..We are a very good team .It was a difficult match ,due to the sending off and we did very well to hang on and win the match .
