Inzaghi calls Inter’s Champions League success ‘a difficult journey against great teams’

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has said that Inter have reached the Champions League final after a ‘difficult journey against great teams’.

Speaking to Sky Sport (via Milan News) at the end of the game on Tuesday night, the former Lazio coach spoke passionately about what his team was able to achieve as they knocked AC Milan out of the tournament at the semi-final stage.

He said that it will take some time to sink in but had praise for the teams they have beaten along the way, which are Porto, Benfica and Milan in the knockout stages.

“From tomorrow we will probably realise what we have done, it has been a long and difficult journey against great teams. These guys believed in it from day one, we had a Coppa Italia semi-final and a league to straighten out in this period, as well as injuries that we managed to limit. Tomorrow I gave them the day off, it has not happened since April 1. From Thursday we’ll have a better idea,” Inzaghi said.

Understandably, the coach was asked whether his Inter team is capable of actually winning the final which will be against either Manchester City or Real Madrid, the first leg of that semi-final ended 1-1.

“We are there now and we will do our best. Tomorrow night we will see the other semi-final, whoever wins will find Inter to play,” he said.

Finally, Inzaghi mentioned the effect that losing the Scudetto to Milan had on the team and how they have fought back: “In four months we have won four derbies. We know how much the Scudetto we lost last year cost us even with two trophies won. The boys were perfect, crazy concentration and commitment as I had asked, covering every inch of the pitch. Now it’s time to enjoy an evening like this.”
