Inzaghi praises Pioli and reflects on time as Milan boss: “No player ever disrespected me”

By Oliver Fisher -

Filippo Inzaghi has admitted that in hindsight he was still too inexperienced when he took the job as AC Milan head coach.

Inzaghi was of course known as one of the best poachers of his generation but he hung up his boots in 2021 and started his coaching career at the beginning of the 2012–13 season, signing a two-year deal as the manager of Milan’s Primavera.

In June 2014 and with a Viareggio Cup to his name, Inzaghi was named manager of Milan’s first team after the sacking of his old team-mate Clarence Seedorf but he would be dismissed in June 2015 after a difficult campaign. He has since gone on to coach Venezia, Bologna, Benevento and Brescia.

Speaking to the microphones of Sportitalia, Inzaghi – who is now coach of Reggina in Serie B – spoke about a number of topics from his time as Milan boss to the current Scudetto race, with our colleagues at SempreMilan.it relaying his comments.

“I congratulate Spalletti, his team plays great, he has one of the best teams in Europe, and he has a long squad so he can fight to win the Scudetto,” he said.

On his decision to retire and coach: “I think I would have continued even at 39, I was fine, I wanted to score more. After scoring 316 goals, scoring against Novara, under the Curva, I think I was right to say enough is enough.

“Thanks to Galliani, I started coaching from that day and in the end it went well for me, because maybe I would have continued and some players drag on in the end. And so it was right, the satisfactions came, even as a coach. I remember a Viareggio Trophy won, which feels like a Champions League.”

On Pioli’s work at Milan: “Pioli has been very good, even with the choices he made, they were good, they deserved the Scudetto and now I hope also in the Champions League. It’s clear that there are superior teams, but I think the Italians can fight until the end.”

On his experience as Milan coach: “Too soon? Maybe yes, I was a young coach, it was a time of change, but I remember that no player ever disrespected me, but that experience strengthened me. We do a wonderful job, where, however, you have to have broad shoulders.”

  1. Lol… except Rami who told him he was sh*t coach. Rami said even he could coach a top team after seeing Inzaghi coach. He had no ideas yet got praised by Galliani for his “good marks” in his coaching courses. Thus reassuring us he was better than Seedorf. Smh
