Longo: Milan run into passport issues with Popovic signing

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan’s first potential signing of the January transfer window is in jeopardy due to passport problems for Matija Popovic,  a report claims.

As has been reported by Daniele Longo on X, the arrival of the Serbian youngster is subject to a passport complication which the club only has days to resolve.

He is expected to arrive on a free transfer from Partizan Belgrade as his contract expires at the end of December, but Milan could be left needing to arrange another striker’s arrival instead.

He will turn 18 on January 8 and that is when he is expected to undergo his medical and sign his contract at Casa Milan.

The agreement reached with the player will last until June 2028 meaning he will sign for four and a half years, should the deal get over the line this winter.

At the U17 Euros in May, his Serbia beat Italy 2-1 and drew 1-1 against Lamine Yamal’s Spain. All three assists were registered by Popovic.

  1. What’s the issue? He has EU passport he is from Serbia!!!! The same thing happened for Kamada and lazio swooped in and take him without the “passport issues” lol this management

    1. Serbia is not an EU member yet. They’ve applied in 2009, but still haven’t been entered in EU. There are few other Eastern-European countries that aren’t in EU yet as well

  2. “However, Italian transfer expert Matteo Moretto claims the Rossoneri are unsure about using the last slot for non-EU players this season to welcome the 17-year-old so his signature has been put on hold.”

    That’s what football-italia reports

      1. Tell your boy maldini he can smile because it looks like Origi and his 4M a year contract are coming back. Talk about a master class!

    1. The Negotiations begun from October why now said it would take non eu spot like they spend so much time and money for the negotiation

      1. There’s another article on football IT Milan want to save the non-eu spot. Maybe for another non-eu player. Does Johnathan David have an EU passport?

  3. I have known Milan to discover a potential player from all over the world but other clubs will buy.
We are very good in starting but woeful in finishing it’s in our DNA

  4. Passport issues my A$s.

Bull$hit at its finest. Popovic is incredible. When a club like City walks in, impotent directors like Furlani steps back.. using cr@p excuses like passport issues.

Marotta snatched Thuram with a call that lasted less than 5 mins. A nasty after-taco fart has more charisma than Furlani.

  5. Milan is torn between him and a striker for the only remaining non EU slot… It’s like Milan wants to use it on a striker, I wish we trusted Jovic more and get this young chap… He is a good attacking midfielder, a role that Milan need to fill in order to play a good 4231… With double pivot.

I am almost certain that we will let him go, yet he’s a free transfer who preferred us over the rest
