Official: Milan’s shortlist gets shorter as Emery renews with Aston Villa

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan have looked at Unai Emery as a candidate to replace Stefano Pioli when the Italian manager departed. However, the Spaniard has signed a new contract with his current club, ruling out a move away from the club.

All signs point to separation between Milan and their current coach, and it could be argued that due to the management’s reluctance to go on separate paths sooner, they have lost out on favoured replacements.

Recently, it has been reported that Thiago Motta is a strong candidate for the Juventus job – at one point, Motta led the Rossoneri’s list of favoured replacements. Following today’s news of Emery’s extension, the list is slowly shortening.

In an official statement on the Aston Villa website, the club confirmed that Emery had extended his deal until 2027 – the Spaniard and the club’s chairman, Nassef Sawiris, cited the great relationship shared as a motivator to extend his contract.

“We are thrilled and are building a sporting operation around Unai to support him with a view of returning Aston Villa to its historic levels of greatness.”

This summer, the management market is expected to be very busy with several clubs set to change their respective head coaches, so with that in mind, Milan must act quickly to identify and hire their favoured candidate instead of being left red-faced if they elongate the recruitment process longer than required.

    1. The new coach is going to be underwhelming…I think we will be loookg at a Pirlo/Van Bommel/Lopetegui.

We need a leader who is going to shoot some f@cos into these players when they stroll about.

  1. What was the point of this article? Lol, anyone can see he is not joining Milan.
Anyway, looks like we are also interested in Arne Slot but we face competition from Liverpool and Bayern.

  2. As a Feyenoordfan I can say this: do everything you can do to get Arne Slot. He is everything you want: clear tactical attacking view, uses young players, makes every single player better, sympatathic in media.

  3. We are losing out on the best candidates because ownership chose to wait and give Pioli one last chance with the EL. It was the wrong decision. The decision to move on from Pioli should have been made when we failed to get out of the CL group. So now Juventus stole a march on us with Motta and Emery is off the board (although TBF the incumbent club always had the advantage here).

    1. Sorry, but I completely understand why they didnt fire Pioli after the CL group. With PSG, Newcastle and Dortmund it was the group of death.

  4. We need to get Conte if we want to win and establish a wining mentality. Everyone else is going to need some time to get acclimated to the league and by the time that happens, the other side of town would have added 2 to 3 titles to their name.
