Pellegatti addresses Milan-Conte speculation: “The name convinces unanimously”

By Ben Dixon -

With Stefano Pioli set to leave AC Milan in the upcoming summer, talk is rife, as it has been all season, about who will replace him. Today, Carlo Pellegatti has commented on one candidate who may be in line for the job.

For Milan, this season will be defined by several lows much deeper than the peak of any highs, and for many, the blame for that lies on Pioli. As a result, the management are seeking to replace him and begin a new era at the club after five years of the Pioli era.

Several names have been linked with the soon-to-be vacant post, and the man deemed favourite for the job has continually shifted, from Thiago Motta in the early stages of the season to Mark van Bommel recently.

One name who has remained near the front, if not in the front, is Antonio Conte, who is currently without a job after leaving Tottenham Hotspur last season. The Italian manager presents the Rossoneri with a difficult decision – he has been successful in nearly every role. However, it would cost a significant amount for him to accept joining the club.

Pellegatti spoke to Radio Rossonera earlier today and offered his opinion on the current landscape.

“Yesterday, I read someone who tickled my curiosity about that meeting of Theo Hernandez with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, photographed on Milan’s social media. Below I went to see the comments: only on Antonio Conte. There were a few insults, but otherwise just that.”

“It seems to me that Furlani said that the technical side leaves it to Moncada and Ibrahimovic and then everything will go back to Cardinale’s final decision: this is the way. Then, who says Fonseca, Conte, Tedesco, Farioli, Van Bommel and carries on with it, I honestly don’t know.”

“Then let’s talk about it. I know that the name convinces unanimously, even journalists like Ordine. The Milan fan today, even though he came second but behind Inter, needs a jolt of enthusiasm. And it comes in two and a half names: Conte, Klopp and I think Thiago Motta. Outside of these 3, I think any name the Milan player doesn’t like.”

“I’ll tell you one thing: Fonseca probably won’t come because he’s going to Marseille. But I’ve already read opinions against it, but on what basis? I am not in favour because I don’t have the basis to say so. I am not against it. But if we reason that all those, except those two or three there, are not good a priori… I know it is so, but Pioli out can mature. But someone who hasn’t yet put his butt on the bench and is already out…”

  1. Sensible three. But e know Klopp isn’t coming. Motta would be well worth the effort. But if he is somehow bound to Juventus, then only Conte makes sense. Even if it is a 2 to 3 year stint.

    1. He’s not bound to Juventus yet as it is all media speculations but he may eventually if AC Milan don’t make convincing steps to persuade him to join them. Inasmuch as Capello and Arrigo Sacchi believe he is the right manager that ticks all the boxes for AC Milan then the agreement between him and Juventus is not solid yet.

        1. Well surely this is the measure to the owners and directors?

          They need to deliver Motta.

          If they can’t deliver Motta in a two horse race then I don’t have in their ability to deliver signings.

          Of course they’re probably too busy looking for another box to box midfielder and right winger…or maybe unsolving problems by selling one of our stars.

  2. A different perspective…
    Conte might be good at winning Serie A but that doesn’t bring a lot of money (compared to second or third spot). If the goal of the management is to increase profits, Conte has failed for nearly every season in Europe.

    Plus I think Conte is waiting to see what happens with Juve before committing himself anywhere. And for those that complain of boring games, wait until you see how Conte’s teams play.

    I think it would take a very drastic shift in mindset from both Milan management and Conte to be able to make this work … People that are saying that he’s the only coach for us, are probably the same that say that Zirkzee is the only striker for us.

    Call me crazy, but I’d rather get Gilardino than Conte

    1. Failing in eu comes in various ways. There is the, this season failed to get out of a group, 4 example..

      Anyway, whoever we bring, we are 5+ years away from really challenging for the cl cup.. anyone who thinks otherwise lives in fairyland

      1. Didn’t make the semi-finals last season (beating Conte’s Tottenham on the way) and then decided to take the ‘next step’ we needed to:

        – fire Maldini, Massaro and most of the back room staff including the revenue guy;

        – sell/push out 2/3 midfield starters that got us there and a few others;

        – sign about 10 new players including 3 x box to box and 3 x RW;

        – not sign a proper CF to replace our 37 year old CF (and leave the signing until last),

        and now we find ourselves ‘another 5 years away’.

        Can’t wait for 5 years and 25 right wingers time when we’re saying we’re another 5 years away.

      2. Look at the CL groups that Conte played and how he got eliminated, he failed with much smaller teams compared to PSG + Dortmund or Liverpool + Atletico.

        Conte wants a winning project and a corresponding budget. Left Juve because they didn’t buy the players he wanted and same at Inter . He said ” you cannot eat in a 100-euro restaurant with only 10 euros”

        As I said, he’s not what we’re looking for, and we’re not what he wants. Both sides need to be desperate to compromise and get this to happen.

        1. Id also want gilardino. Curious what he can do with a better team. Plus he seems hella flexible, isn’t stuck to 352

  3. Have people watched how his teams have played the last several years? Imagine him and Leão together. What a mess. Conte would want to rebuild the whole midfield. Offensively the team would regress.

  4. Conte agreed with napoli so e’s out of the picture. Which also tells me that milan basically told him we don’t want you

      1. Coaches are running thin here and im scared were going to be left with somebody who’s not an upgrade to pioli!

        1. Maybe we stick with 1/3 current Serie A coaches (including Allegri but excluding Conte) who has actually won a Scudetto?

  5. In football italia it mention that conte reach agreement with napoli for 3 years, with salary 6,5 m.. considering how much inter and totenham pays annually for conte, 6.5 m is a lower than that.. its not officially yet but that quite interesting.. motta to juve, conte to napoli.. well i guess milan will get another mediocre coach…

  6. Conte is not for Milan. He is too italian, too boring, too expensive.

    He will not make profit like Pioli. Moneyball Moncada will gone with his desire to overspending for old guys.
