Pioli praises goalscoring duo and explains tactical success against Juve: “It worked”

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli was understandably happy with AC Milan’s performance this evening as they claimed all three points against Juventus. In short, they got just the confidence boost they needed ahead of the Chelsea return.

The Rossoneri managed to take the lead just before half-time through Fikayo Tomori, who made the most of an Olivier Giroud shot on a corner. Just ten minutes into the second half, Brahim Diaz doubled the lead with a great solo run.

Speaking to DAZN after the game, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli shared his thoughts on the important win and the formation choices he made. He also praised Tomori and Diaz for their efforts on the pitch.

On Tomori…

“He has an incredible spirit and passion. Look how he celebrates even when he scores. He’s great.”

On the match…

“It was a game with great intensity. In the first 20 minutes, we missed a few too many passes and therefore we gave Juventus some restarts. The chases and sacrifices are part of the game. Leao must take the last step in the non-possession phase. The return he made in the second half means that he was in the game.”

On the group…

“We were a team. In London we were disunited, we made too many mistakes. Today we were more of a team, we have to do this in all of the games.”

On the formation choices…

“Diaz had already played on the right. I wanted a bit of substance and physicality in the middle and more one-on-one on the wings with Diaz and Leao. It worked, we stayed on the pitch well.”

De Ketelaere on the right…

“At this moment (injury crisis), Charles can play on the right, today he entered well. But for me, on the right, his qualities are not enhanced. Diaz can do that shift better.”

On pressing…

“In the first half, the two teams played with great intensity and therefore we made more mistakes. In London, we made too many mistakes. Today we put great energy, congratulations to the guys who deserved this victory.”

On Diaz…

“He’s great. Like everyone he always wants to play, he must be good at taking advantage of every opportunity, as he is doing. I know he’s not very happy with my choices, but he’s always been very helpful.”

Milan will take on Chelsea this coming Tuesday and they will be looking for revenge after the 3-0 loss in London earlier this week. Most likely, the starting XI will be similar to what we saw today, seeing how well it worked.

  1. 4-3-3 suits us better coach. amazing adjustment!

cant wait Maignan, Kjaer, Ibra back with us, then 4-3-3 would be very much complete.

Maignan, Theo, Tomori, Kjaer, Kalulu, Tonali, Bennacer, Pobega, Leao, Diaz, Ibra

    1. actually when we vs Juventus, we still use 4-2-3-1. Look at Pobega, he play higher & it is a ACM’s AMC role. Pobega did Franck Kessie’s AMC playing-style.

And as explained by Pioli : He want more physical at mid (AMC). So Brahim that not so physical go RW.

I like Brahim to play faster like this. It suits him flair, his strong point : dribbles & beat his markers. He should be the RW solution, hopefully grow up to be better than Messiah Jr.

  2. The biggest difference why Milan actually much improved today compare to Chelsea, simply because our both right and left back more quality. Theo is back on the left and kalulu shift to the right, instead of dest. Dest need to improve a lot, otherwise he is going to rot on the bench.

  3. Somehow last night CDK is not running at his opponents. CDK is releasing the ball after 5 metres of play. Quick 1-2 is good but there is so much space that he can easily afford to run 10-15 metres more. He needs to watch more past videos of Rui Costa or Kaka.

  4. Teacher’s pet Diaz scoring was the last thing we needed. He has one good game in 10. CDK is a much better option on the right. I hope Maldini sees sense and sends the weak midget back to Real Madrid.

    1. So you hate a loan player scored and help Milan win even the player himself always act professional and give his 100%?

      What a shame 👎
