‘In Portugal negotiating with a player’ – Ex-Milan midfielder makes claim about Maldini’s sacking

By Oliver Fisher -

A former AC Milan player has revealed that Paolo Maldini found out about the plan to sack him while he was actually abroad negotiating with a player.

The whole Milan world was rocked last June by the news that club icon Maldini has been sacked from his role as sporting director with Ricky Massara to follow in what felt like a real ‘Big Bang’ moment in RedBird Capital’s early tutelage.

Less than 48 hours after the win against Verona to end the season, it was confirmed that Maldini and his right-hand man Ricky Massara were being relieved of their duties as the technical and sporting director, plunging the project into question.

A period of uncertainty followed in which the reasons for the fall-out between Maldini and RedBird were debated, as well as mystery regarding who would be taking over the reins. It is not too dissimilar to the present post-Pioli uncertainty.

Roberto Scarnecchia, a former Rossoneri midfielder, spoke to TMW about the future of Milan and the appointment of a new head coach, revealing an interesting anecdote about Maldini.

“I would have renewed Pioli’s contract for another 5 years. They greatly underestimated the work of the Rossoneri coach, who is someone that is building,” he said.

“I don’t like how the club operated. Maldini, for example, called me and said that he was abroad and told me that he had been sacked and was in Portugal negotiating with a player. There are some inexplicable choices.”

  1. Damn!
Paolo was still trying to sign Renato Sanches, even last summer!?!? 😅
What is this guy talking about? Wasn’t Paolo fired in a meeting with Cardinale a day after the season ended?
But, then again the guy said that he would have renewed Pioli for another 5 years. Everything he said after that lacks any credibility.

    1. Opinions are not the same as information.”I would have renewed Pioli’s contract for another 5 years.” is just his opinion and has nothing to do with the credibility of the information.

        1. Yes his information is not credible, I am not arguing that point. I just pointed out that even if he were to agree with Pioli’s firing, it would not change the credibility of the information at all.

  2. Sacking maldini and massara was an unpardonable move by cardinale. Events always prove maldini right. He was right to ask that pioli be removed in summer 2023; he was right to insist milan get a strong central defender (botman); and he was right to sign charles de ketalaere seeing his marvellous year with atalanta.

To choose milan’s new coach – easy – just ask maldini to suggest one!!!!

  3. I’m not used to abusing people, but sorry to say, a lot of daft people are on social media. How do people read and rush to comment without understanding what they read?
The headline state this; “ A former AC Milan player has revealed that Paolo Maldini found out about the plan to sack him while he was actually abroad negotiating with a player”.
I thought with this headline, no one should be talking of where and how Maldini was sacked, because that is not the case.
He knew he was going to be sack while he was away in Portugal, for crying out loud!!!

  4. Maldini did extremely well considering when the Elliott’s were in a difficult situation coming at the back of the clubs purchase from SB and given that Maldini had peanuts to spend he built a splendid squad consisting of Maighan, Leao, Theo, Giroud, Kjaer, Tonali and many others. They are all great players now and RedBird will see some dividends from their sales if and when they happen to leave.

Well done Maldini you are a true Milanista and will always remain a Milanista. Maldini is for Milan and Milan is for Maldini, investors come and go.
