Sky: 39 games missed and a €40m valuation – Milan reflecting on Maignan’s future

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan would evaluate offers that arrive for goalkeeper Mike Maignan during the summer transfer window for two reasons above all, a journalist has claimed.

Maignan’s name has been circulating in the media more than usual over the past few days, starting with Saturday’s game against Juventus which he was forced to withdraw from at the last minute after sustained an adductor strain during the pre-game warm-ups.

Then, a couple of reports have since suggested that the Frenchman will soon reach a crossroads in his Milan career because of his contract situation and the fact that there are doubts about both his form and fitness.

Now, the journalist Manuele Baiocchini has given his take on Maignan’s situation during an update that was broadcast live on Sky Italia, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.

“Mike Maignan has missed 39 matches since he became a Milan player, therefore around 30% of the team’s overall appearances and almost an entire season’s worth between injuries and various suspensions,” he said.

“This season he has played more, in fact collecting 40 appearances but he has already missed seven games and with this injury he will miss the next 2-3 league matches.

“The Rossoneri will be able to do their reflections, also regarding his contract expiring in 2026: if a significant offer for the French goalkeeper arrives from another cliub, Milan would seriously consider it.”

The Sky website meanwhile report that the injury issue ‘reopens the discussion’ regarding Maignan, especially because there has been no progress on the contract renewal negotiations.

Milan are taking their time because they know they cannot be caught unprepared like they were with Gianluigi Donnarumma, a free transfer that ironically paved the way for Maignan to arrive.

Having paid €16m to sign him from Lille, the feeling is that the 28-year-old is now worth in the region of €40m, which is less than it might have been previously but would still be a large capital gain.

  1. 40 million is nowhere near his current value. The majority of the missed games is from the injury in the prior season.

That said, he most likely will be sold this summer, all the talks are in that direction, wouldn’t be surprised if the sale is already wrapped up.

  2. In my humble opinion these are the coaches and players Milan need next season to compete for the scudetto:

    Coach: Thiago Motta
    CB: Buongiorno (Torino)
    DM: Renato Veiga (Basel)
    CF: Artem Dovbek (Girona)
RB: Tiago Santos (Lille) offload Calabria and Florenzi
LB: Juan Miranda (backup for Theo)
