Tactics expert explains why Tomori’s 1v1 against Maddison was so impressive

On social media, a clip of AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and James Maddison going 1v1 in England training has been doing the rounds. Both players have been praised for the sequence, showing their respective class.

Tomori played from start in England’s friendly game against Australia last night but didn’t have a huge impact in the 1-0 win. In training, however, the Milan man has looked very good.

In one clip that has been doing the rounds on social media, the centre-back went up against Maddison in 1v1. He showed off an amazing perseverance, staying with the midfielder for a long time until the latter eventually won the battle.

The Athletic’s tactical expert Liam Tharme, who has been a guest on the SempreMilan Podcast a couple of times, explained on Twitter what was so impressive about Tomori’s defending.

“Delighted Tomori has got the 1v1 appreciation he deserves here. Small steps, crouched at an angle to the ball, on his toes, back foot in line with the ball, show him on outside (weak side) as much as possible, step to block when he cuts in,” he wrote.
