Tuttosport: Milan carry out blitz for Spurs-linked defender ahead of January window

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan need to sign a centre-back in January due to the long-term absences of Pierre Kalulu and Marco Pellegrino. As per a report, they are ready to challenge Tottenham for the services of Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Kalulu and Pellegrino both got injured in the 2-2 clash against Napoli and will be out for quite some time, especially the Frenchman. Therefore, Milan need to reinforce the team in January and a centre-back is the top priority as things stand.

According to today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews), the Rossoneri’s chief scout Geoffrey Moncada observed Lloyd Kelly during Bournemouth’s clash against Burnley. However, the initial idea was to bring him in on a free transfer in the summer, when his contract will expire.

The injury struggles have thus promoted Milan to carry out a blitz, hoping that the price tag will be significantly reduced given the contract situation. Having said that, as the report concludes, Tottenham are also interested in the 24-year-old and could also make a move in January.

Maxime Estève, who has been linked with the Rossoneri for many years now, is still at Montpellier and remains the Plan B for the centre-back position.

  1. I’m not saying Pioli’s a genius – he makes mistakes, like every coach – but you can’t tell me the injuries to all our center backs in the Napoli game didn’t contribute to the draw. We have an injury crisis every year – that’s the biggest problem at Milan, not Pioli imo. (Actually, that and this insane schedule – which is feeding into the injuries.)

        1. Yeah I will try to explain it within a small paragraph. In place of 32 teams now there will be 36 team which will be placed in a single group. Each team will play 8 games with 4 home 4 away games. The top 8 teams will directly qualify for RO16 meanwhile teams finishing 9-24 will participate in a playoff round for the remaining 8 spots. The knockout stage i.e. the round of 16 will remain unchanged.

          1. Two more thing to add. There’s no restriction what team you can face, for example now Milan can play Inter in group stage or Real can play Barca. The 4 other slots will be given to the other teams with best record in whole of Europe, most likely 1 will be given to one of the EPL clubs. It’s like the Swiss system we see in CSGO tournaments.

          2. 1 group with 36 teams ? that cant be right !!! so every team in the same group wont meet eachother but only some.
That makes no sense at all.
Considering the development of the sport in recent years this might actually be the final straw for me and might make me consider quit supporting this circus of a sport 🙁

        2. They just care about making more and more money. The current UCL format is perfect and we are accustomed with this format. They are completely disregarding the players and the clubs, they won’t be able to manage playing these many games every calendar year.

          1. Yeah i absolutely agree with everything you said
            here Doki.
I initially forgot to say thanks for clarifying it for me but thanks nevertheless but i got so furious about this news that i can only say its good im not the neighbour of uefas headquarter right now.
