Igli Tare is currently the frontrunner in the race to become AC Milan’s new sporting director, as his work at Lazio seems to have impressed the leadership.
According to Calciomercato.com, a meeting took place between Tare and CEO Giorgio Furlani yesterday in Rome. It was a long discussion in the capital in which a number of topics were spoken about, including naturally the plans for the mercato.

Speaking of which, Tare’s body of work at Lazio is largely impressive. He was a director at the Biancoceleste from July 2008 to June 2023, in an adventure that lasted 18 years (including the seasons as a player at the end of his career).
There are 10 signings that he made which can be considered the moves of a visionary, starting with the arrival of Hernandes from Sao Paulo for €13.5m. The attacking midfielder would go on to make 156 appearances for Lazio, scoring 41 goals and adding 23 assists.
Miroslav Klose was rather remarkable signed on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and he would net 63 times in 171 games for them, with 35 assists. Senad Lulic had a long career and became a real leader for the Aquile, joining from BSC Young Boys for only €3m.
Antonio Candreva joined Lazio on an initial loan from Udinese which was made into a permanent deal for €9m. He would go on to make 192 appearances for the club from the capital, with 45 goals and 42 assists an impressive return.
Felipe Anderson moved from Santos to Lazio for €7.5m and was sold to West Ham for a €30m capital gain before being brought back to the club on favourable terms. The Brazilian winger has 58 goals and 63 assists in 326 games for Lazio.
Another success story was Stefan De Vrij, who signed from Feyenoord for just €7m. He became one of the most solid central defenders in Serie A before moving to Inter on a free transfer, where he still remains.
Heading towards the end of his career, Tare took a punt on Lucas Leiva, bringing him in from Liverpool for just €5.5m. Playing at the base of the midfield, he would go on to play 198 times for Lazio, a fantastic return on a small investment.
The final three need little introduction. Firstly there is Sergey Milinkovic-Savic: bought for €12m from Partizan Belgrade, he reached a maximum market value of €90m, amassing 69 goals and 58 assists for the Biancocelesti.
Luis Alberto cost only €4m to sign from Liverpool and he was worth €55m at one point. The Spaniard was regularly linked with a move to Milan, and he racked up an excellent 52 goals and 79 assists for Lazio.
Finally, Ciro Immobile: bought for €8.5m, he reached a maximum market value of €50m, being sold to Borussia Dortmund. He then came back like Felipe Anderson on favourable terms and is on 207 goals for Lazio, their top scorer ever.
The only thing that made Milan consider him is that he is cheap and willing to accept the position. Every other self-respecting SD told Furlani to stick the SD position where sun doesn’t shine.
Stop trying to make this guy into something he is not, he is not a winner, he is not what Milan needs, he represents the downfall of this club and a failure to attract even the SD’s that are currently stuck in tinpot or mediocre clubs. He represents everything that Milan should aspire not to be, but sadly it is, an irrelevant club with an idiot owner and incompetent management.
Who would you have suggested they hire?
Those mediocre clubs are in the champion’s league and may offer more latitude, less pressure than the role brings at Milan. It could be those supposedly more attractive options don’t feel ready or comfortable to be in a high stakes environment where their job is to win trophies and bare minimum make the CL. Anything less and they are out of work. Whereas Bologna and Atalanta are quite happy to keep a SD that achieve bare minimum results. It is more stable for them.
There are also cessation and contract break clauses that are in play which make it unfeasible to hire them at the moment. Also reputations and integrity. It could be some people gave their word to their respective clubs and intend to honor their commitments. They have good things going on for them in an environment they enjoy. There is no reason for them to leave just yet.
There is more to it than our eyes can see. The most viable and guaranteed option to get things ready for next year is Tare. We don’t have time to negotiate with Bologna, Napoli or Atalanta. They are direct competition and would need to find a replacement before us to agree to let go of their current employees. They may also delay releasing their current employee after agreeing to the new signing to cause delays in our preparations to gain competitive advantages in preparing their next seasons.

You’re not supposed to improve on Ibra, that’s like going from a bowl of human excrement with onions, to bowl a bowl of human excrement without onions. You’re still eating $hit. Milan deserves someone good, not someone better than Ibra. Being better than Ibra is not a an achievement.
if his work was that impressive why he is without a job for 2 years+? and also apparantly anyone is better than ibra and moncada also tare isnt going to take ibras spot its moncadas spot and moncada will return to just scouting players. bring back paolo and boban if he wants massara too
you consider maybe these positions don’t open often at the level of a club like Lazio or he made enough money to take time off to enjoy his life a bit before returning and would only be open to doing it at a club like Milan?
He could have simply refused some offers as well.
He worked incessantly for years on end and been involved in football even as a professional player. He could take a couple years off for his own mental well being and enjoy some of his time with his loved ones away from the sport a bit. His competence and capabilities are backed up with a resume to match.

He is a midtable SD who is praised for buying cheap and selling expensive, not for creating a team, but for creating an atmosphere if a feeder club. His accomplishments include just 4 UCL qualifications in 13 or 14 years, a few players that were so overpriced they ended their professional careers in Lazio and now play in retirement camel league or are still stuck in Lazio. Oh lets not forget 6 trophies that combined aren’t worth half of a single Scudetto.
He is only considered because after how club has treated Maldini, how they fired Fonseca, no one wants to do anything with Milan. Club is desperate and if there was anyone else, even a houseplant, willing to accept that position, Tare’s name wouldnt even be mentioned.
