AC Milan found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline against Atalanta on Friday night, and since the game, the headlines have suggested that the Rossoneri are out of a Scudetto fight, but why?
At an elite level, football can be really simple, and in this case, logically, it is. Milan have not been good enough consistently to find themselves in a title battle. Unfortunately, this is the case at both ends of the table.
Against sides at the bottom end of the league, the Rossoneri have been quite shoddy, and whilst there are some expected results, there are also odd results like a loss to Parma and a draw with Cagliari.
But it is the top side of things that we are going to look at in depth.
An obvious struggle
We have often left big games this season feeling like the Diavolo should or could have done more, but seeing it contextualised puts things, worryingly, into perspective.
As stated, seeing things like that is rather worrying, and explains Milan’s position very easily. Only two of the top eight have a negative record in these games and with that, a negative PPG record. Both of those teams sit outside of the European spots – the Rossoneri and Bologna.
Of course, we can caveat this, and say the Rossoneri have played the most games (so there is more of a case compared to say Fiorentina, who have only played three times against the top eight) and the only game left to play is against a side that no team inside the top eight has lost against – the Rossoblu.
But this would be avoiding the problem. Failing to win against five of the top eight teams is problematic in itself, and this is without even looking at the games on a case-by-case basis.
Issues at both ends of the pitch
In five of the six games, the Rossoneri have conceded two goals, and this is probably due to Paulo Fonseca’s excessive rotation of the defence – in the games against the top eight, there have been four different combinations across the six games (Tomori-Pavlovic, Tomori-Gabbia, Gabbia-Pavlovic, Thiaw-Gabbia).
Sticking with the defensive record, only Bologna have conceded as many goals in these games (though we can offer Milan some slack here given they have played more than the Rossoblu), and the trend continues.
The sides who concede the most lose the most points, and are coincidentally the two trailing teams inside the top eight – what was that about football being simple sometimes?\
Perhaps we can also then look to goalscoring, the Rossoneri have six goals in these games, which is tied only by Fiorentina on six goals (though with three games less played), and only Bologna have worse (three goals in four games).
Per game, Bologna are the only side with a worse GPG rate (0.75 GpG compared to Milan’s 1 GpG), and once again we refer to football being a simple game.
So not only are the Rossoneri scoring less than their European rivals, but also conceding more.
If we look at the two sides to lead Serie A in recent weeks, Atalanta have scored nine in five (1.8 GpG) and conceded eight (1.6 GApG) whereas Napoli have scored six in five (1.2 GpG) and conceded five (1 GApG), which is better than the Diavolo in all categories (1 GpG and 1.67 GApG).
This is without even looking at the points being collected by Atalanta (who have achieved the most against the top eight and lead Serie A, possibly, as a result). Even Napoli, who have collected six fewer points against the ‘top’ teams than Atalanta lead the Rossoneri by 10 points.
The harsh reality for Milan
To conclude, there have been suggestions that the Rossoneri have ‘lost the title’ simply because they couldn’t perform against sides in the lower half of the table and whilst this is perhaps true to some extent, the findings of this are a damning explanation of the Rossoneri’s situation.
We can make a suggestion of our own. Between Atalanta and Milan, there is a 12-point gap, and yet there is an 11-point difference between their records against the top eight… that there is a title fight difference.
As previously stated, the Diavolo have scored less, conceded more, and most importantly lost more than most teams, in the case of the latter, they have done so more than any other team in this case study (if we can call it that).
That right there is the key reason why Fonseca’s side find themselves trailing, and probably out of, the Scudetto race, despite the persistent regurgitation of Milan’s title ambitions from those around the club, the facts are clear to see.
The Rossoneri are not in a title fight, and whilst their eyes are focused on those above them, the ground below them is only sinking and faith is falling in the coach.
Maybe it’s time for that superleague. We battle against the bottom teams as well as those at the top in serie a. Maybe we have outgrown the serie a…maybe the team was designed to compete with those in the elite of Europe. Nothing makes sense about the struggles we find ourselves in, giving credence to my outlandish claims of the superleague being our next logical direction. Or simply just get rid of the coach and reset…it boggles the mind that Atalanta with no real brand name players, Napoli resetting not once but twice in the past 3 seasons, Inter losing some of their best players in recent times, Juve resetting and yet none of these teams looking 10% as bad as Milan does. So get rid of the coach…
Super league is a tactic to get The oil clubs from arab countries and money into traditional europe teams. With no Salary Cap, European football is doomed and will be even more corrupt than ever. But super league is a good idea with salary cap.
What’s a ‘brand name player’!
The top 5 teams are separated by a measly 3 points. It’s one of the best, tightest, most competitive title race (so far) in a very long time. And we’re nowhere to be found in that. What a shame!!!
We are nowhere because we don’t have a striker ..
So many we critical of Olivia Giroud and poil ,but we won the scuddeto with them both ..pioli was a tactical genius, and he knew how to get the best out of his players…in particular with Giroud who was such a good target man ,,so strong in the air ,and such an ability to be at the right place at the right time.Yes a great fav of mine ..of course he had to move on ,as did pioli ..
But have we progressed not at all ..no way we will get into the top four …no decent striker ,or new manager .
Oh yea many were critical of him but I’ve pretty much defended him all the way. What he did and with what they’ve thrown at him he did quite well. Always competitive each season ie not out of the Scudetto by October for instance. 11 new players? Navigated that. Lost his DM kessie? Made do as best he could. Lost the other defensive mids Tonali and Krunic? Made do with that too. Always top 4/UCL spots, took us to a UCL semi. Sure his record vs Inter could be better but otherwise he’s been excellent. And even with that he beat Inter on the way to the Scudetto too so it wasn’t like he never beta them. And I kept warning ppl be careful for what you wish for.
It’s not that his time wasn’t up or anything…heck I’ll even buy that argument but it’s the management that I don’t trust. I just don’t trust them to have replaced him with someone better and it’s showing here. They’re going backwards in the cycle of progress not forward. We didn’t need the cheap coach anymore, it was time to build upon. Similar with the team after the UCl semi run, we didn’t need to rebuild the team..we needed to build upon.
Correct. We don’t have a striker – management didn’t want to spend on one so we settled for Morata – who is a great bargain at 13M – but let’s face it – at this stage in his career – should be the perfect backup and occasional starter – and not a player who has to start every 3 games. But we always go the cheap route and we are where we are.
None of this is surprising. Our fate was sealed with the hiring of Fonseca. That shows the ambition (or lack therefor) of the club. You get what you pay for. A below average coach who flamed out last time in Serie A and of course our brilliant idea was to hire him???? LOL. Wonderful. Now we have a coach who antagonizes players, blames anyone but himself for his poor tactics, and on top of it can’t produce meaningful consistent results. Scudetto is gone. Lucky to finish top 4. UCL lol. Ya sure. Keep dreaming
And to top it off our 🤡 management team is supposedly infighting (Ottavio vs Zlatan); had a mistake ridden transfer market wherein they managed to dump our players for next to nothing (Maldini, Adli, Kalulu etc…) and arguably replaced them with lesser players (Emerson) or nobody at all AND STILL failed to address crucial needs – DM, Striker and backup LB. Wonderful. Oh ya and they are stalling on the renegotiation of Theo – one of the best LB in the world. Brilliant.
Now at any other club with our history and tradition – a real owner who have already fired the coach and replaced the management team – but alas we have Redbird who seem perfectly fine with all of this.
Good times
Let them cook juro let them cook. And before long we’ll be done (pun intended 😄)
Gread comment juro buddy.
Emerson suppose to be royal gift from management for fans. But it is a prank from management.
We miss that giroud guy. No giroud no party. What a fantastic sign by maldini
Generally the team with the best manager wins.
Looks like we have the 7th best manager.
I would say 6th best. I don’t think Motta’s tactics or his squad is really as good as people are making them out to be, and his results after losing a couple guys to injuries shows it.
Where is the support from those people after the 6-1 win? Show some lovee here man! /haha
Especially the dude with Milan jersey profile pic, he had massive 6-10 posts in comment under One article.
I guess, now winning the league is to score >100 goals vs weak teams, at least for Milan?! Yeah haha.. he and Gerry know this better than anyone else!
In the beginning of the year, our weakest link was at center back.
More recently, it’s been the fullbacks. Theo has decided not to track back, and Royal has shown himself to also be a liability.
Theo will be gone for €50m and that’s for the best. Let’s get 2 quality fullbacks who can stay st home.
We have enough firepower up front.
3-4-3
Leao-Tammy-Chuk/liberali
Theo- Rejnders- Fofana- Musah/Jimenez
Bart/Tom-Gabbia- Thiaw
Milan concedes a lot of goals because theo is NOT a defender; emerson royal is poor; and Calabria is generally weak though willing. Also constant chopping and changing of CBs seems stupid idea while maignan is not fully the maignan that we once knew.
Fofana and Reindjers are both fantastic but leao is lazy and only plays 10 minutes per match. With Morata and abraham as your attackers you cannot go places.
Also milan’s play is boring, dull, unattractive, slow, stagnant, unimaginative and poor – monotonous possession of the ball, lots and lots of back passes and horizontal play while opponents retreat further back. Maignan is infuriating when he moves about with the ball at his feet not knowing what to do and then invariably kicks it out when under pressure or to an opponent.
WE NEED BADLY NEW COACH WITH NEW IDEAS, NEW STYLE OF PLAY AND WITH SERIE A EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND.
UNLESS WE HURRY, MANCINI OR ALLEGRI OR SARRI WILL ALL BE GONE WHILE OUR FONSECA AND HIS ALLIES CONTINUE WITH THEIR JOB OF DESTROYING MILAN – THEY ARE DOING IT PERFECTLY.
Hey Ben, you forgot one important factor. Of all the teams in the top eight, non has a directors’ board with as puffed egos and minimal managerial skills as Milan! Take for example Napoli. You may say ADL has similar egos as Cardinale, but ADL has dragged NAP from Serie B to contending for titles in a space of 15yrs! But Cardinale… Need I say more?
Milan is depressing 💔
Keep sane hlumelo, don’t think about suicide please, milan can lose another fan
